The Waipahu football team earned the ultimate prize last Fall with its first state championship in school history.
It's only fitting that the Marauders swept the top awards in the ScoringLive Division I All-Hawaii selections.
Junior running back Alfred Failauga and senior safety Deacon Kapea earned Player of the Year honors for their efforts on their respective sides of the ball and fourth-year coach Bryson Carvalho is the Coach of the Year.
Offensive Player of the Year: Alfred Failauga, Waipahu, RB, Jr.Failauga — who earned First Team Division II honors the past two seasons — did not finish as the state's leading-rusher after missing most of the regular season with a hand injury, but his return sparked a season turn-around.
The 5-foot-11, 183-pound running back rushed for 1,163 yards and 10 scores in nine games, reaching the century-mark seven times and in the Marauders' final six games of the season.
"He's your typical workhorse kind of guy," Iolani coach Wendell Look said of Failauga. "He gets better and stronger the more he touches the ball. He was able to put his team on his shoulders and carry them, literally."
Defensive Player of the Year: Deacon Kapea, Waipahu, DB, Sr.When Failauga was out of the lineup, Kapea did a respectable job filling in as a running back with 279 yards and six touchdowns, but it was his nose for the ball in the secondary that made him an electrifying player.
Kapea matched Failauga's 10 rushing TDs with interceptions as the 5-foot-10, 200-pound safety totaled 10 picks, which included a hat-trick performance in the state semifinals against Iolani.
He also had a nose for the end zone with three interceptions that were taken back for a score. His final pick-six of the season gave the Marauders a 28-7 halftime lead over defending-state champ Hilo in the state title game.
"He's the epitome of what you'd want at the safety position," Hilo coach Kaeo Drummondo said of Kapea. "He's big and physical enough to come up in run support and rangy enough to play coverage over the top. He's also really instinctual and that was evident in the amount of interceptions he had."
Coach of the Year: Bryson Carvalho, WaipahuCarvalho deserves credit for keeping the team stay focused throughout the course of the season despite a up-and-down regular season.
The Marauders loss four games during the newly-fashioned OIA-ILH interleague agreement, which included a 50-20 homecoming disaster to Leilehua in which Waipahu had a 13-12 lead at the half.
Instead of thinking about next year, the Marauders turned it around and avenged its loss to the Mules in a road playoff win. They than won the league title, avenged a 55-14 regular season loss to Iolani with a 20-19 come-from-behind win in the state tournament and then knocked off the defending state champions to win the koa trophy.
ScoringLive's All-Hawaii teams honor standout Division I and II athletes statewide. Selections are made by SL staff in consultation with media and coaches.
