HALAWA — Chevan Cordeiro threw for 266 yards and four touchdowns all before halftime to lead top-ranked Saint Louis to its third consecutive Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I title with a dominating 38-2 win over No. 4 Kamehameha Saturday night.

The Crusaders (8-0) notched their third win over the Warriors (4-5) this season and claimed the league's lone berth in next month's D1-Open state tournament before a crowd of about 6,000 fans at HawaiianTel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium.

"It feels good because now I'm the starting quarterback and not the second string guy, and it feels good to win an ILH title with my boys," said Cordeiro, who backed up now-Alabama signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa each of the previous two seasons.

Cordeiro, a senior quarterback, completed 18 of his 25 passes and was intercepted once. He connected on TD passes of 6 and 46 yards to Mitchell Quinn and 19 and 24 yards to Roman Wilson.

Cordeiro completed passes to eight different receivers in his one half of action and also rushed seven times for 30 yards.

"We have a lot of talent — first string, second string — we're all good and it helps because the o-line gave me a lot of time to throw to the wide receivers," Cordeiro said.

Just three weeks ago, the Warriors put up a much closer fight in a 23-12 loss to the Crusaders. This go-around played out similarly to the first meeting, which resulted in a 44-0 blanking.

"We just had a lot of film, watching and learning from our mistakes and just working as a team," Cordeiro said.

Saint Louis took advantage of a bye last week, while Kamehameha battled its way to a 44-31 upset of Punahou in the second-round semifinals.

"I think we were just more prepared because we experienced playing them twice already and we just knew what they were going to throw at us," said senior defensive back Cody Hee, who finished with a team-high four tackles and two pass break-ups.

Crusaders' coach Cal Lee praised the preparation of his players.

"Because of that long span that you have, I mean, you don't know what's going to come out in two weeks, but I give the kids a lot of credit because we had great practices," said Lee, the winningest prep coach in state history. "They understood that even though you played them twice, you beat them, anything can happen, so they practiced really hard and that's what it showed. It showed tonight."

Saint Louis' first score was set-up by a blocked Kamehameha punt by Lawaialani Brown to give the offense the ball at the Warriors' 29-yard line.

"That's big. You block a kick like that, you get a little bit of momentum, you get the fire, the juice going, everything going and to finish it off, to me, I think that's awfully big when you can block a kick on special teams," Lee said.

Five plays later, Cordeiro found Quinn on third-and-goal for a 6-yard score.

Later in the first quarter, Wilson reached over a defender in the back right corner of the end zone for a 19-yard TD pass from Cordeiro.

Midway through the second quarter, Cordeiro found a wide-open Quinn on a deep ball along the left sideline for a 46-yard TD. The scoring play came on a third-and-16.

Just before the intermission — and three plays after a high snap on a Kamehameha punt that resulted in a 10-yard loss — Cordeiro zipped in a 14-yard scoring strike to Koali Nishigaya in the left, front corner of the end zone.

The Crusaders took a 31-0-lead into halftime.

"I mean, the kids played real hard," Lee said. "Defensively, offensively we made some big plays. We got up on them early, which kind of helps the tempo of the game, but we beat a pretty good team. Take nothing away from them."

Kamehameha's lone score came on defense. Early in the second half, Kalawaia Pescaia and Hoku Arias combined on a sack on Crusaders' backup QB Maika Bonner in the end zone for a safety.

Bonner's 24-yard TD pass to Wilson with 5:09 left in the third quarter enacted the running block and closed out the scoring.

Saint Louis passed for 356 of its 415 yards of total offense.

Jacob Tobias made a 36-yard field goal early in the second quarter and was a perfect 5 for 5 on extra points.

The Warriors, who needed to win Saturday to force a winner-take-all rematch for the overall ILH crown next week, finished with 133 yards of total offense and were 0 of 14 on third downs.

"I think what motivated us the most was just being mentally prepared and watching film, reading their quarterbacks and their routes they were running," Hee said.

Isaiah Tufaga also had an interception and Jordan Botelho recorded a sack for the Crusaders.

Akalea Kapono finished with a game-high five tackles in the loss. Jonah Kahahawai-Welch had two of Kamehameha's five sacks and Kamahoi Sanchez intercepted a pass.

Quarterback Thomas Yam completed just nine of his 31 pass attempts for 75 yards, six of them to Onyx Freitas for a team-high 52 yards, and running back Kanoa Shannon posted 50 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Saint Louis has played in the past two state finals — including last year's 30-14 win over Kahuku in the inaugural Open tournament, for its fourth state championship in school history.

"You work towards winning the ILH championship and your gift is to go to the state tournament and it's a credit to their hard work, so they deserve everything that they get from now on," Lee said.

Three of the four spots in the D1-Open tournament have been claimed. Oahu Interscholastic Association finalists Kahuku and Mililani will join Saint Louis, with the winner of the OIA third-place game between Waianae and Campbell assured the final spot. The tournament gets underway on Nov. 10.
