Head coach: Neil Azevedo (3rd season) Offensive coordinator: Bernard Kia Defensive coordinator: Kaliko Iopa
Players to watch: WR/S Keanu Tavares (6-1, 190, Sr.), OL Shauntae Taifmai (6-0, 260, Jr.), QB/RB Jacob Pakani (5-8, 175, Sr.), QB/RB/LB Daycen Aurelio (5-11, 200, Jr.), WR Jai Miyamoto (5-11, 130, Sr.)
Coach's words: "We tell them to be happy and grateful to be practicing because we don't know what tomorrow will bring. For the senior group, they have the same vision, it's not about themselves. The bunch of kids we have now, they're hungry and they want to be the guys to start up a program. I'm happy with the kids we get and once they gel together, we feel it will be a good season." - Neil Azevedo
SL's take: After a 1-9 record in 2017, including an 0-7 mark in the BIIF, the Warriors appeared to be turning things around in year one under Azevedo. They debuted under Azevedo with back-to-back wins to open their 2018 season and were victorious in three of their first four contests that year. However, they went on to drop their final three games, including lopsided defeats at the hands of Hilo, 41-0, and Kamehameha-Hawaii, 51-0. In fact, Waiakea's 14-13 win over Keaau on Sept. 22, 2018 was the last time it won a football game. The 2019 season was a step backward, as the Warriors went winless and were outscored by their opponents on the year, 547 to 57. There's nowhere to go but up for this squad. Tavares and Aurelio will be do-it-all type of players, with the former expected to contribute at S in addition to WR and on special teams, while the latter will see most of his time on offense, but will also chip in at LB when needed. DE Micah Fukunaga (6-3, 240, Sr.), LB Tevita Hala-Latu (6-1, 215, Sr.) and S Lorenzo Vidad (5-7, 160, Sr.) will also be key pieces at each level of the defense. In addition to Taifman, Robert Pule-Annes (5-8, 240, Jr.) will be another important piece on the OL.
