Head coach/Defensive coordinator: Ian Van Cleave (1st season) Offensive coordinator: David Murray
Players to watch: LB/TE Jamin Kua-Cantan (6-1, 215, Sr.), LB/OL Keiki Goo (5-9, 185, Sr.), QB Kaohu Kaluna (6-0, 150, Jr.), WR/LB Rocky Abadilla (5-10, 180, Jr.), S/WR Kepa Lyman (6-0, 165, Jr.)
Coach's words: "Our team vision is 'E ho'oikaika e holomua,' to work hard for progress, or strive for success. That is the mindset we are building as young adults in the classroom, on the field and in the community. With this mindset of continual growth, we see ourselves challenging for the BIIF championship." - Ian Van Cleave
SL's take: Van Cleave was the offensive coordinator under former coach Leo Abellera, who stepped down since the 2019 season after nine years leading the Cougars. Van Cleave, a 2006 graduate of the school and physical education teacher there, actually shared co-head coaching duties with Abellera two years ago, when Keaau went 4-6, good enough for a fourth-place finish in the then-six team BIIF Division I standings. It won its final two games (over Waiakea and Honokaa), but only the top two teams at the end of the regular season (Hilo and Konawaena) qualified for the league championship game. Kaluna, who transferred from Hilo, is an athletic QB with a good arm and is one of the fastest players on the team. Van Cleave is excited about the size and athleticism that Kua-Cantan brings to the TE position in Keaau's pass-heavy offense. Goo, Abadilla and Lyman will all contribute on both sides of the ball. Keaau saw a large number of players graduate last year and with Honokaa dropping down to D2, wins could be hard to come by this fall.
