Lia Galdeira scored a game-high 19 points and Dawnyelle Awa added 13 points last night as defending state champion Konawaena held off Oregon City (Ore.), 62-53, in the 'Iolani Prep Classic semifinals.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 46 in the nation by ESPN Rise, will face Brea Olinda (Brea, Calif.) -- No. 11 in USA Today's Super 25 -- in tonight's 8 o'clock title game. Oregon City, which finished last season ranked No. 3 in the state, will meet 'Iolani for third place at 6:30.

"They're a good group, they have above-average athletes who can make shots," Oregon City coach Kurt Guelsdorf said of Konawaena. "They have two (NCAA) Division I guards who would be among the top guards in Oregon -- they're top guards in general, really."

The Pioneers opened with their trademark up-tempo game that features full-court pressure and fast breaks at every opportunity, but the Wildcats welcomed the pace and used a 13-1 to jump ahead, 21-8, by the end of the first period.

Konawaena pushed the lead to 35-20 at halftime and built it to 40-20 just 30 seconds into the third period after a 3-pointer by Hokulani Liftee, before Oregon City clawed back to close it to 45-33 entering the fourth.

The Pioneers narrowed it to 52-44 on Jade Lowery's layup with two minutes remaining, but Awa sank eight consecutive free throws over the next 70 seconds to seal the victory.

"We just wanted to play smarter, slow things down a little and not get too caught up in the running game," Wildcats coach Bobbie Awa said. "We needed to focus, because sometimes when you get tired, you cannot do the things you need to do."

Courtney Kaupu added 12 points, five rebounds and two steals and Makayla Awa chipped in with 10 points for Konawaena. Kaupu, a junior forward who was pretty much a role player last season behind Anuhea Wall, has scored 28 points in the past two games.

"Last year she played in the shadow of Anu and only had a few minutes per game, but she worked hard all summer and that helps because we needed a big this season," Bobbie Awa said. "For her to come up big the last two nights, it's refreshing."

Montana Walters (four 3-pointers) and Johanna Paine led Oregon City with 16 points each, and Lowery added 11 points.

Brea Olinda 65, 'Iolani 60

Keitra Wallace scored a game-high 26 points and Taylor Spears added 10 points as the Ladycats held off the Raiders, who got 18 points -- including four 3-pointers -- from point guard Kylie Maeda.

Brea Olinda led 13-6 midway through the first period and stretched it to 39-24 late in the second before Saphyre Rezentes scored on back-to-back layups to close the Raiders to 39-28 at halftime. Rezentes later drained consecutive jumpers to narrow the lead to 49-46 entering the fourth quarter, and she sank two free throws to tie it at 55-55 with 2:28 remaining.

But the Ladycats got three layups in a row over the next 80 seconds to go up, 61-55, and after Rezentes made two free throws to cut it to 61-57 with 56 seconds left, Brea Olinda sank three of six foul shots down the stretch to close out the win.

Rezentes finished with 17 points, including 10 in the final 10 minutes, and Abrianna Johnson-Edwards added 11 points.

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) 68, Mid-Pacific 54

Ashlin Gross scored 25 points and April Rivers added 11 points to lead the Lady Gaels, who out-scored the Owls 22-7 in the fourth period and will play Tsinghua (Beijing) for fifth place at 5 p.m.

Kiki Robertson led MPI with 17 points and Megan Kinoshita and Pua Kanekoa each added 10 points for the Owls, who led 37-30 at halftime and 47-46 entering the fourth.

Tsinghua (Beijing) 47, Kaimuki 22

Jiaying Ma and Danlei Feng each scored 10 points to lead Tsinghua, which is ranked No. 2 in China.
