FINAL  1   2   3   4   5

KAIL (7-8) 25 25 16 22 10 2

ALIAMANU — The Bulldogs are the top dawgs in the OIA.

Waialua fell behind in the first two sets but proceeded to reverse sweep Kailua 21-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-10 in a five-set thriller to win their first-ever OIA Division II title in school history at Radford's Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

Jerry Keola led the Leilehua girls volleyball team to their first OIA title in school history in 2021 and in 2024 he brought the first league title to the small North Shore town.

"Prayers work. My Heavenly Father is always there for me. He seen me through Leilehua and He seen me through now Waialua. What can I say? Without the Man Above, I couldn't have done anything," Keola said.

The Bulldogs rode a six-game winning streak to end the OIA season with a 9-3 overall record and clinched a seeded berth in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball Championships starting on May 9.

Jaris Ablao led a balanced Bulldogs' attack with a double-double 13 kills and 10 digs. Keoni Nahoopii added 12 kills, seven digs, and Shane Kelly notched 11 kills and seven digs.

Outside hitter Quick finished with nine kills and nine digs to go with seven solo blocks.

"I wanted that banner. Individual success is awesome, but this is a team sport and I came in here for that banner to be hung up in my gym with my teammates and our year on it," Quick said.

Cyres Lacar piloted the Bulldog attack with 39 assists and had a team-high 17 digs.

Kailua dropped three-straight games to Division I opponents, Moanalua, Roosevelt, and Castle (in that order), who qualified for the state tournament but went 3-3 in their final six games to finish the OIA season 7-6 overall.

Opposite Kaleb Cui led all players with 22 kills and hit .241 for the match. He added 12 digs and five total blocks as the Surfriders finished the OIA season 7-6 overall.

Setter Jesse Tuipulotu-Davidson had a game-high 40 assists to go along with three blocks and nine digs. Matthew Mashiba and Tuipulotu-Davidson each had seven kills.

Waialua led 4-0 to open the fifth set after Quick's block. Kailua would cut the deficit in half but Lacar's cross-court pass to Kelly put the Bulldogs ahead, 7-3. Matthew Mashiba's kill brought the Surfriders within two and Kailua got within two for a second time, but could not get any closer.

"It was just getting that side out. Keeping ahead of them and not letting them get more than two points. If they got two, we have come back to get three," Keola said.

Quick rose up for the solo block to give Waialua a five-point cushion. Cui landed a kill from the right side and Kailua scored off an attack error to trail, 13-10. Waialua scored the next two points to seal the match as the team rushed the court.

"We're the underdogs…small school but big dreams. We have a big community and big fan base that came out to support. I appreciate everyone from Waialua that came down and help us get this victory," Quick said.

Kailua pulled away in the first set with a 4-0 run to go up, 19-14 following Torin Ferreira's dump off kill into the front row. Waialua got within three, following Kelly's block, but the Surfriders took the set on a service error.

In the second set, Kailua led by as much as five but Waialua chipped away and tied the set at 18 after Ablao's kill. Kelly gave the Bulldogs their first lead, but that was short-lived as Cui answered to tie it with a kill and reclaimed the lead following Tuipulotu-Davidson's kill into the middle. Nahoopii landed a kill to trail, 23-22, but Kailua scored the next two points off Elijah Telea's kill and capitalized on an attack error.

"No one expects Waialua to be here. We gave it our all this season to perform and give it our best. We were down two, but we told each other not to give up the chance. We're still here, we're still in it. Third and fourth set we did a reverse sweep and it all worked in our favor," Quick said.

Waialua staved off elimination and extended the match in the third set. The Bulldogs took a commanding 19-11 lead with a 5-0 scoring run. Kailua got within six, but Waialua maintained a nine point lead three times that held up to force another set.

"We changed our lineup. You noticed I threw my big that was hitting outside to oppo side because we knew they couldn't contend with him out there. We brought in our little guy hoping that they would mistaken him for not that great of a hitter, but the boy can jump," Keola said.

The Bulldogs hit .147 and .125 in the first two sets but upped it to .321 in the third set.

"They definitely brought the best out of us, especially taking two games straight. Hats off to them big time. We knew we had to dig in deep and that third set, we knew we had to get one more and right after that, it was ours for the taking," Keola said.

The Bulldogs carried the momentum into the fourth set and took a big 9-0 lead. Quick tallied three blocks in the run and Ablao landed a service ace. Nicco Ruiz got Kailua on the scoreboard and made a mini rally to cut the deficit down to six. The Surfriders trailed, 17-15 after Tuipulotu-Davidson's ace and lift violation brought Kailua within one.

Waialua created some separation with a three point lead and extended it to as much as five, 24-19 off Quick's swing. The Surfriders scored the next three points off Cui's kill and Alakai Sulusi and Tuipulotu-Davidson combined for the roof. Quick forced a fifth and decisive set after converting Lacar's assist.

"When you have a big lead like that you have to keep it. Volleyball is a game of momentum and my coaches say, ‘First team to grab onto the momentum and hold on, almost always comes out on top,'" Quick said.

The Surfriders tallied 17 total blocks while the Bulldogs had 11.

Waialua won two of their three matches that went to five sets this season while Kailua was 0-3 in their matches that went to five sets.

The Surfriders were seeking its first OIA title since 2014, fifth overall but makes its first state tournament appearance in a decade.
