WAHIAWA — Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and Tana Togafau-Tavui had it going Saturday.

Sagapolutele passed for 306 yards and four touchdowns — two of them to Tavui — to lead No. 4 Campbell to a lopsided 48-7 win over No. 15 Leilehua on a cool and slightly wet evening at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

A crowd of about 1,000 fans saw Open Division-Sabers (3-0) remain undefeated, while the Division I-Mules (2-1) were handed their first loss of the season.

The left-handed Sagapolutele connected with fellow-junior Togafau-Tavui on touchdown passes of 50 and 10 yards — both of them in a 20-point second quarter for Campbell — and also hooked up with Zayden Alviar-Costa and Tainoa Lave on scoring strikes.

"It was just a great game," said Sagapolutele, who completed 21 of his 31 pass attempts. "Our o-line is the biggest factor for every game, always holding their blocks and allowing me to pass the ball downfield every time."

Togafau-Tavui pulled down eight catches for 113 yards, both season-high marks. The reigning OIA Open Division Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Hawaii receiver had seven grabs for 96 yards by halftime.

"That's expected. He's a baller, number one receiver in the state — he should have that almost every game," said Sagapolutele, who targeted Togafau-Tavui a dozen times in all.

The Sabers had 288 yards of total offense by halftime and finished with 417 total yards.

Conversely, Leilehua was limited to only 136 total yards. It converted just one of its 13 third down opportunities.

"We discussed with the defense to just get us stops so we could can put the offense on the board and we can score as may points as we can, but the defense did amazing, our offense did too, but we still got a lot to fix," Togafau-Tavui said.

Campbell opened the scoring just a few minutes into the contest. It capped an eight-play drive with a 19-yard TD pass from Sagapolutele to Alviar-Costa on a fourth-and-5. Sagapolutele exploited a lapse in coverage in the Mules' secondary, which left Alviar-Costa wide open on the scoring play.

Later in the first quarter, the Sabers doubled up their lead via James Steffany-Fiame's 4-yard TD run. The drive was extended by an ill-timed Leilehua personal foul following a third-down stop that moved the ball just outside of the red zone.

On the Sabers' next drive, Sagapolutele was intercepted on a pass tipped at the line of scrimmage by linebacker Matteus Ioane and snatched out of the air by Gabriel Liua. The Mules, however, were unable to recycle the turnover into points and instead were forced to punt. On the very next play, Sagapolutele connected with Rusten Abang for a 33-yard pick-up and one play later, Steffany-Fiame punched it into the end zone from three yards out.

Leilehua went three-and-out on its ensuing drive and Campbell needed just two plays to find the end zone once more. Togafau-Tavui found open space on a wheel route to the left sideline and Sagapolutele hit him in stride for a 50-yard touchdown pass. Cristian Wyckstandt's PAT stretched it to a 28-0 lead with 9:14 to play in the first half.

The Mules got on the board not long after when they finished off a nine-play, 85-yard drive with a 48-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Logan Peters to Timothy Arnold. The score came on fourth-and-15 and four plays after starter Hanohano Plunkett was knocked out of the game due as a result of a late hit from a Campbell defender.

But Sagapolutele and the Sabers orchestrated a nine-play, 74-yard drive that culminated with his 10-yard TD pass to Togafau-Tavui, who came down with the ball just inside the rear boundary of the end zone.

"I honestly didn't know he was going to throw it to me, but I'm just glad that he did and me and Jaron have that connection so it's always going to be there," Togafau-Tavui said.

Campbell led 34-7 by halftime and added to its lead with a couple of touchdown passes in the third quarter.

Sagapolutele's only completion to Lave resulted in a 16-yard touchdown. Lave made three defenders miss on the screen play that made it 41-7 with 9:39 on the clock. Donny Faavi's 7-yard TD pass to Jayzen Fernandez with 2:12 until the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.

The Sabers were only 3 of 8 on third downs, but 6 of 8 on red zone chances. They tallied 19 first downs to just nine for the Mules.

Leilehua averaged more than 163 rushing yards per game entering the game, but was held to minus-4 yards on 20 carries Saturday.

Arnold finished with five receptions for 106 yards in the loss.

T'nias Tavale (five tackles, four for losses, two sacks) and Lave (3 1/2 tackles, 2 1/2 for losses, interception) led Campbell defensively.

Kevin Burke recorded seven total tackles, 2 1/2 for losses, and one sack for Leilehua.

Both teams will play non-league games next week. Campbell will play at Liberty — which held off Saint Louis earlier Saturday, 34-30 — in Henderson, Nevada Friday night. Leilehua will host No. 9 Konawaena, the reigning D1 state champion, at Hugh Yoshida Stadium Saturday night.
