Kamehameha-Hawaii made the long trek from Hilo to Kona to participate in a tri-team scrimmage with Konawaena and Kealakehe at Waveriders Stadium.
The teams rotated their offensive and defensive units by series against each other. Each series was approximately 10 plays with no special teams' play.
Here are some observations of all three teams from Saturday's scrimmage.
KEALAKEHE
» Randy Hatori is a playmaker on defense. He seemed to be in on just about every big play for the Waveriders, notching a forces fumble as well as a pick off in the flat he ran back for a score. Kikuyama might have shined the brightest statistically, but Hattori showed pretty clearly that he is the heart and soul of the Waveriders' defense, not only for his relentless, attacking style, but also for his ability to be a facilitator and leader.
» Anthony Trevino lined up at quarterback in Kealakehe's second series and showed some nice ability to make plays with both his arm and his feet. He may ultimately spend more time at receiver in the Waveriders' offense, but its clear he can make things happen with the ball in his hands, and looked to be a bit more comfortable behind center than junior Travis Grace did.
» Qishaun Gallon made some nice plays at the safety position, breaking up a Ewing pass attempt along the left hash, showing good closing speed and a nicely timed leap to get the deflection. He later intercepted a pick intended for his brother, Konawaena's Kamakana Ching.
KAMEHAMEHA-HAWAII
» Kaimi Like might have lacked some velocity on throws, but he certainly made up for it with some nice touch and placement. His rainbow to Ayston Motta went for 70 yards, the longest play allowed by the Wildcats defense all afternoon.
» Israel Bowden could be a favorite target for Like out of the slot. The two connected for a 40-plus yard play as well as a 25 yard one and looked to have good rapport on both short and intermediate routes. Bowden is tough to bring down after the catch for his size.
