Defending state champs Roosevelt girls, Kapolei boys fair well at OIA divisional judo championships


The Oahu Interscholastic Association held its Eastern and Western division individual judo championships Saturday.

The East meet took place at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium, while the West meet was held at Pearl City.

Moanalua and Kalani had three first-place finishers apiece in the East boys competition. Logan Garcia (108 pounds) and brothers Noah (121) and Chase (132) Wusstig won for Na Menehune, while Micah Tateyama (145), Jared Kaneko (161) and Kailer Okura (198) triumphed for the Falcons.

Kahuku claimed both heavyweight divisions with LeRod Tongi winning at 220 pounds and Lennex Alo at 285, while Kaimuki's Daniel Lauffenberg captured the 178-pound bracket.

Defending state girls champion Roosevelt won four weight classes, as did Moanalua. Menjam Tamang (103 pounds), Haylee Fujioka (109), Macy Higa (115) and Kaylah Samia (220) won for the Rough Riders, while Amanda Higa (98), Sienna Ho (129), Faith Joy Okuda (139) and Kyrah Hughley (172) won for Na Menehune. Other individual winners were Kalani's Phoebe Pineda-Abaya (122 pounds) and Kahuku's Saelor Taumua (154).

Two-time defending boys state champion Kapolei had five individual winners in Andre Pagurayan (114 pounds), Anthony Brett (132), Rodman Salangdron (161), Aaron Sotoa (198) and Johnny Morrison (220).

Other weight class winners were Campbell's Andy Vong (108 pounds), Mililani's Cody Tallman (121), Pearl City's Baylen Cooper (145), Aiea's Brandon Burgos (178) and Waialua's Aaron Nunez (285).

Meanwhile, the Chargers dominated the West girls competition with six titlists. They were Mikayla Abe (109 pounds), Netanya Kang (122), Sarah Kaaiakamanu (139), Nina Seoane (154) and sisters Jackie (172) and Jenine (220) Fuamatu. Kapolei had two winners in Trinity Mateo (98 pounds) and Summer Carras (129).

Aiea's Nicolle Nishimura (103 pounds) and Mililani's Mayu Wise (115) also won their brackets.

The OIA individual championships will be held at Leilehua's Paul T. Kobayashi Gymnasium Saturday.
