MILILANI - A week after suffering its first loss, Mililani bounced back with a 48-12 drubbing of Campbell Friday night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Conference action.

The Trojans (4-1 overall, 3-1 Red West) used a balanced offensive attack (205 yards passing, 189 rushing) and got scores from both their defense and special teams units before a home crowd of about 1,600 at John Kauinana Stadium. The Sabers (2-3, 1-2), who played without three of its starters, dropped their second straight game.

"We're definitely happy to come away with a win, but we still have a lot of work to do," Mililani coach Rod York said. "Give credit to Campbell though, they didn't have their (starting) quarterback (Justin Tago) and they're a different team with him."

Mililani kept it on the ground in the early on, scoring on three first-half 1-yard runs. Campbell pulled to within two scores twice, but the Trojans scored the final 21 points to hold off the visitors. The Sabers were held to 211 yards of offense and were just 3-of-12 on third-down conversions.

"Last week a lot of our guys on defense came out scared and timid," said Trojans' senior safety Elijah Lagafuaina, referring to the 42-28 loss to Wai'anae. "This week (in practice), we stressed tackling, swarming to the ball and wrapping up."

Mililani opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on a 1-yard Payomo run to cap an eight-play drive. The senior running back carried five times for 23 yards and caught a 14-yard pass on the drive. Elizabeth Gustafson's kick was good and the Trojans led 7-0.

The Trojans turned it over for the second time on their next drive, but the Sabers couldn't capitalize and punted away to give Mililani the ball on its own 40-yard line.

Payomo again carried the Trojan offense to its second rushing score on a six-play drive. The 5-foot-9, 170-pounder carried on five consecutive plays to set-up Trent McKinney's 1-yard quarterback sneak to make it 14-0.

Mililani got a late score with just under a minute before halftime. On second-and-goal from the Campbell 2-yard line, McKinney faked an end around to slot receiver Bryson Calma, botched the handoff to Payomo on a dive before tucking the ball and walking in around the left end. Gustafson's extra point gave the Trojans a 21-0 at the intermission.

Campbell marched downfield on its opening drive of the second half. The Sabers manufactured a 10-play, 53-yard drive, highlighted by Nilo Agbayani-Omalza's 6-yard TD pass to Keoni Paglinawan. The PAT was no good and Mililani led 21-6.

However, the Trojans' defense responded on the Sabers' next drive. On a second-down play, linebacker Chase Rojas forced a fumble and Klandon Fetaui fell on the loose ball in the end zone. Gustafon's kick was good to make it 27-6.

Campbell answered with a 40-yard scoring strike from Agbayani-Omalza to Keoni Piceno with 2:39 left in the third to cut it 27-12, but gave the points right back on a special teams blunder. On the ensuing kickoff, Mililani's Jonathon Makaiau fielded the attempted squib on the fly and went untouched for a 52-yard touchdown return.

It was the defense's turn to find the end zone just minutes later. Early in the fourth quarter, Fetaui got to the quarterback and caused another Sabers' fumble, which was returned 29 yards for a score by Ati Patu.

"That's just like icing on the cake," York said. "On defense, we just try to get three-and-outs and win the turnover battle, but we'll take those scores on defense and special teams anyday."

Mililani got a late score on a TD pass from McKinney to DeShawn Benson. McKinney was an efficient 16-of-20 passing for 205 yards with one interception. Payomo led all rushers with 139 yards on 17 carries.

Besides Tago (neck), Campbell played without nose guard Sheldon Maae (head) and middle linebacker Giovanni Stevenson (hand).
