MANOA - No. 4 Kamehameha scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-all game to knock off fourth-seeded Hilo, 5-1, in Thursday's quarterfinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I state baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Warriors (12-7) will play in Friday's semifinal against the winner of the Campbell-Moanalua quarterfinal.

Ladd Ah Choy pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-hit relief of starter Joshua Souza for the Warriors.

"I was teetering with starting him today," Kamehameha coach Tommy Perkins said. "I wanted to see how long we could go (with Souza)."

Perkins wouldn't disclose who would start for the Warriors in the semifinals, but added that Wednesday's starter, Codie Paiva, who used only 37 pitches in two innings, is available.

Joey Jarneski pitched 6 2/3 innings for the fourth-seeded Vikings (9-5), allowing five runs, four earned, eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

With the game knotted at 1 entering the top of the seventh, Micah McNicoll was hit by a pitch and took third on Matthew Yokota's hit-and-run single to second. After Kahoea Akau struck out, Yokota stole second. Dylan Salcedo then drew a nine-pitch walk to load the bases. Codie Paiva then singled into the left-side hole, where shortstop Josiah Factora made a back-hand stop, but his throw to short was wild. One run scored on the single and the other on the error to put Kamehameha up 3-1. With runners at second and third because of the error, Makana Arakaki followed with a two-run single to chase Jarneski. Kaiden Cox came in and retired Brandon Henderson on a fly to right, but the damage was done.

The Vikings got a lead-off single by Factora to start the seventh. After stealing second, Factor went to third when Noah Serrao reached on an error by third baseman Paiva. But Nick Anthony grounded to shortstop for a double play as the runner held third. Micah Bello flied out to left to end the game.

Kamehameha starting catcher KeKai Rios was ejected in the fourth inning for an unsportsmanlike conduct. An ejection usually comes with a suspension for the next game. Perkins appealed the suspension and it was overturned, so Rios is available to play Friday, sport coordinator Glenn Nitta said.

"He got hit by the same batter, throwing the bat twice," Perkins said he was told by the umpire on Rios' suspension. "He complained; (Rios) said something to the umpire. The umpire said (Rios) threatened the other guy. (Rios) told you, 'The guy hits me again…' So he tossed him.'"

Salcedo, a sophomore, filled in admirably for the veteran Rios, who has signed with the University of Hawaii. His walk helped set the stage for the Warriors' four-run seventh.

"He did a great job," Perkins said. "He's a sophomore catcher We have high hopes for him. We feel he needs a little more work. He probably has the best mechanics."

Ah Choy also was great settling the game to give his team a chance to get back. He entered the game with two out and runners at first and second and inherited a 2-0 count from Souza to face the Vikings' cleanup hitter Factora. Ah Choy's first pitch was a ball, but Rios picked the runner off at first to end the inning. He also liked how the sophomore catcher filled in for Rios.

"He did good," Ah Choy said. "He was probably the most clutch guy today.."

Hilo took a 1-0 lead against Souza in the first inning. Jarneski led off with a single and an out later, scored on Russell Raguan's double to left-center. Raguan was thrown out at third trying to stretch his double. It would be the first of three runners the Vikings lost on the bases. Along with the runner picked off first to end the third, the Vikings had a runner thrown out at home trying to score on a passed ball.
