MAKIKI — Ranan Mamiya provided most of the offense, while the defense made just enough plays to help Farrington survive a scare Saturday night.

Farrington got 251 all-purpose yards from Mamiya, who accounted for three touchdowns in his team's 28-26 win over Kapolei at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos. The Governors improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Blue conference, while the Hurricanes dropped to 0-2.

"It was a good battle," said Mamiya, a senior running back. "We came through four quarters. Our defense made a big stop at the end and altogether it was just a good team effort."

Mamiya ran in touchdowns of 7 and 21 yards and also scored on a 94-yard kickoff return — all in the first half.

"I give all the credit to my linemen, my fullback and everybody that blocked for me," said Mamiya, whose kickoff return came one play after the Hurricanes' got a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Tristan Centeio.

Kapolei had just pulled within 14-12 with the score near the midpoint of the second quarter.

"That was a back-breaker," said Hernandez, who expressed lament over the play of his special teams' units. "The kicking game has really haunted us this year. We gave up a 94-yard return for a touchdown at Kahuku last week and the kicking game has not been our strong point."

A week after starting placekicker Makana Breault suffered a season-ending collarbone injury, the Hurricanes failed to convert on its first three extra-point tries.

"It's the same thing every year — we lose by a little bit to Farrington — and it's the same thing: it always comes down to the kicking game," said Hernandez, whose team is now 0-6 against the Govs all-time. "We had to scramble to find a kicker. We didn't have a kicker, so that's how it goes and we lost against because of the kicking game, but you've got to give (Farrington) a great deal of credit. They ran the ball well, Mamiya was superb tonight."

Mamiya received the kickoff at his own 11-yard line, worked his way toward the right sideline and broke several tackles before racing to the end zone.

That kickoff return was huge," Govs' coach Randall Okimoto said. "He's a threat doing those things and credit to those guys blocking for him and the good thing about him is he appreciates the guys that block for him. There was some great blocking on that play."

Following the PAT by Kekoa Sasaoka, Farrington held a 21-12 lead, however Kapolei got a late second-quarter score on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Alton Julius to Edward Kea. The Govs held a 21-18 lead at the intermission.

Challen Faamatau punched in a 1-yard touchdown run to punctuate Farrington's first second-half drive and Sasaoka added the extra point to extend the lead to 28-18.

Kapolei then put together a 13-play drive that included three third-down conversions and resulted in Julius and Kea hooking up again, this time on a 12-yard scoring strike with 2:14 left in the third quarter. The same pair connected on the ensuing two-point conversion to pull the 'Canes within 28-26.

The Hurricanes failed to get any closer, turning it over on downs in two of their final three drives. They had one final chance when they regained possession with 2:28 to play and drove to the Govs' 34-yard line, but Julius' fourth-down pass intended for Centeio fell incomplete. Farrington took over the ball with 1:24 left and ran out the clock to hang on.

Julius finished 10-of-17 passing for 129 yards and was not intercepted. His first touchdown pass was a 29-yarder to Ty-Noah Williams to open the scoring minutes into the first quarter. Trensten Spragling paced the rushing game with 19 carries for 79 yards and Ronald Matautia and Lorenzen Panapa each had eight tackles and a sack. Matautia also recovered a muffed Farrington punt that extended the Hurricanes' third-quarter scoring drive.

Bryce Tatupu-Leopoldo led the Govs with a game-high 10 tackles. Jeremiah Pritchard and Breiden Fehoko added eight tackles apiece.

Kapolei, which entered the weekend ranked ninth in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Power Rankings, hosts Mililani Saturday while sixth-ranked Farrington visits Moanalua Friday.
