It wasn't a pretty game, but the Farrington Governors found a way to win over upset-minded Kapolei, 17-10 in the quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red playoffs at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Field.

Deadlocked at 10 with a little over six minutes in the fourth quarter and following Kapolei's 24-yard missed field goal attempt, Farrington quarterback Montana Liana threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Baguio for the go-ahead score.

"We practiced that play all week at practice, because we practiced and perfected it so I knew I was confident in that play so I told our coach if we could run that play and he had confidence in me in making that pass and we did it," said Liana.

"Credit to Montana and our offensive line because they still had confidence coming off an interception," said Farrington coach Randall Okimoto. "He (Liana) played well and made some good decisions and controlled and led the offense like a quarterback should. He did that in the Kahuku game and showed that tonight. To have over 200 passing yards, I think it flip-flopped in terms of stats, usually we have more rushing yards than passing yards so it's nice to have that option to throw the football."

Montana Liana finished the game 13-of-19 passing for 210 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Jacob Baguio had 5 catches for 121 yards and hauled in two of Liana's touchdowns.

Farrington's leading rusher, Sanele Lavatai left the game in the first quarter with an injury and did not return.

"Our team depends on him and it's a big loss for us, but the team rallied behind him and they talked about winning it for him because he means so much to this team. Hopefully he can come back next week," said Okimoto.

The Govs used a 7-play 61-yard drive and Baguio caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Liana to go up 10-7 with 30 seconds remaining before halftime.

Kapolei's Alton Julius drilled a 43-yard field goal to tie the game at 10 in the third quarter.

Farrington forced two Kapolei turnovers late in the fourth quarter, a fumble recovery and an interception by Tre Boyd.

"Our defense stopped them strong and their missed field goals allowed us an opportunity to score," said Liana.

"We were very fortunate and they made some mistakes on certain big plays. Things were going our way so we were blessed to have this win," said Okimoto.

Kapolei's defense forced three turnovers (2 fumble recoveries by Micah Paris and Kone Maluina and an interception by Tristan Centeio). The Hurricanes capitalized on Micah Paris' fumble recovery after Triston Pebria rushed for a 29-yard touchdown and Arielle Stoyanow's kick gave the Hurricanes a 7-3 lead in the second quarter.

"We had a lot of turnovers and you don't win the game if you give the ball away more than the other team. But that's two games in a row that we won and we gave the ball away more than the other team so we're blessed to have this victory because that doesn't happen often," said Okimoto.

Farrington got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter after Kekoa Sasaoka kicked a 30-yard field goal.

Kapolei ends their season at 6-4 overall while Farrington will play No. 5 Campbell in the semifinals on October 24 at Aloha Stadium.

"There is a 24-hour rule, we'll celebrate now and forget it tomorrow and focus on our next opponent," said Liana.

"Hopefully it was a wake-up call tonight, after you beat a great team the biggest problem is staying humble and being focused. You think you reached your destination with a big win, but these teenagers need to understand and grow that it is the past and you have to move on when you want bigger goals," said Okimoto.
