'EWA BEACH - Eventually, the wear and tear took its toll on undermanned McKinley.

After the Tigers pulled to with 14-13 midway through the third quarter, Campbell responded with 26 unanswered points in a 40-13 win Friday night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red tournament quarterfinals at the Sabers' field.

The Sabers (7-2), fifth in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Power Rankings, will play Eastern Division champion and No. 7 Farrington (7-2) in one semifinal Thursday at Aloha Stadium. It is a rematch of the 2011 semifinals won by the Governors, 27-24.

McKinley (5-5), done for the season, put up a fight against the deep Sabers, who uses an offensive and defensive platoon. The Tigers' roster is made up of all-purpose players. Just about every key player performed on both sides of the line of scrimmage, including quarterback Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta, also a linebacker.

"Maybe (using too many) two-way players got to us," McKinley coach Joseph Cho said. "That's a lot of football for our kids. But give Campbell all the credit in the world. That's what we're trying to strive for, you know, someday get two platoons like (Campbell) did. All we can do is keep working at it."

It was matchup of haves and have nots. Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said he was able to use a rotation of eight different players on the offensive line, which helped the Sabers amass 453 yards of offense.

"By far, in my six years here, this is the best line we've ever had," Amosa said. "You talk about agility; they can move. Just little things here and there. We just have to fine tune. We don't make mistakes where we have to find somebody. We have about eight guys that we rotated all year long."

The Sabers' defense was reliable as it has been all season. Campbell came up with three interceptions off Tuitele-Iafeta, two by Abiel Taito, whose first pick set up one Sabers' TD. His second interception was returned 44 yards for a score. Jerney Tago-Su'e had the other interception.

Linebacker Waylen Lindsey had a sack and three other tackles for lost yardage. He was responsible to containing Tuitele-Iafeta (34 yards rushing) and RB Gerime Bradley (17 yards rushing). Besides the sack, he tackled Tuitele-Iafeta for a 2-yard loss and Bradley for a 3-yard loss. He also stopped receiver Chevas Pacheco for a 5-yard loss on a pass play.

"Those were the two main guys stop," Lindsey said.

The Sabers had methodical start, scoring a touchdown in each of the first two quarters. Running back Austin May capped a 98-yard scoring drive with a 44-yard TD run that put Campbell ahead, 7-0 with 3:06 in the first quarter and in the second quarter on a 4-yard pass from Hurd, a right-hander rolling left, to May to make it 14-0 with 5:01 in the half.

But Tuitele-Iafeta got the Tigers rolling quickly with a six-play drive in which he was 4 of 4 for 76 yards, including a 17-yard TD to Tyrell Tuiasosopo to pull the Tigers to 14-7.

The Sabers gambled on their next series, going for the first down on fourth-and-5 from their own 47. An incomplete pass by Hurd gave the Tigers good field position with 52 seconds left, but that opportunity was squandered by Tago-Su'e's interception.

The Tigers put Saber Nation on the edge of its seat when Tuiasosopo intercepted Hurd and returned the ball 38 yards to the Sabers' 19. It was Hurd's second pick of the game. The Tigers' four-play drive ended with a Tuitele-Iafeta sneaking in from the 1. But the PAT missed, so Campbell maintained the lead at 14-13 with 6:07 in the third quarter.

But Hurd got over the turnover quickly, leading his team on a 13-play, 65-yard drive by scoring on a 1-yard run to make it 21-13 with 1:42 in the third quarter.

"Coach always tells us no matter how bad things get, you have pull yourselves up," Hurd said. "You have to forget about the last play. It's gone. Just prepare for the next play."

The Sabers defense continued to bear down on a tiring Tigers' team. Taito's first pick set up Hurds 7-yard TD run that made it 27-13.

It got worse for McKinley when it fumbled the ensuing kickoff at its own 27. Two plays later, RB Galuega Castro scored on a 4-yard run to make it 33-13.

McKinley got picked on its next series and Taito returned it 44 yards for a score with 3:48 in the game.

It was a homecoming for McKinley's Bradley, who played for Campbell's JV as a freshman before his family moved to town. He hung around longer than his teammates after the game to meet old classmates and his former coaches. He was proud of his team's effort.

"We made a big improvement," he said. "We had a great season. We did make (it up to) one level better than last year. Last year, we got taken out first round (by Campbell), this year we got taken out second round."
