KAPALAMA HEIGHTS - Despite running more than twice as many offensive plays as its opponent, Saint Francis still found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard Saturday night at Kunuiakea Stadium.

Kainoa Simao rushed for 136 yards on just 10 carries, scoring on touchdown runs of 9, 36 and 3 yards, and scored another on a 95-yard kickoff return and Kamehameha rolled the Saints, 61-26, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu interdivisional game.

Saint Francis had 66 offensive plays to Kamehameha's 32.

Turned out Division I Kamehameha (7-1 overall, 4-1 ILH), second in the ScoringLive/ OC 16 Power Rankings, didn't need to run as many plays as its opponent. The Warriors inherited a short field and scored quickly and scored twice off of fumbles. And Simao's kickoff return took only 18 seconds.

"We didn't tackle very well defensively," Kamehameha first-year coach Doug Cosbie said. "We made some mistakes on special teams."

Still, "a win's a win," he said.

The team's rushing leader, running back Brandon Kahookele, sat out nursing an assorted leg-related injuries, Cosbie said.

Meanwhile, the undermanned Division II Saints (1-6, 0-5) still gave the Warriors fits. Quarterback Ranan Mamiya was double trouble, rushing for 181 yards, including a 48-yard TD, and passing for 95 yards and two TDs. For the 27 times he was charged with a rush, he was sacked three times. Most of the time, he ran, sometimes out of desperation to avoid a sack.

The Saints churned out 18 first downs, although five were results of penalties. They were hurt on errant snaps in shotgun formation, one of which led to Kalen Lyman-Risso's fumble recovery in the end zone. It was more about a lack of depth with a number of players playing out of their usual position, including a center, Saint Francis coach Mike Ulufale said.

"We had a number of players playing positions they never had played before," he said. "We had a center (Lualala Fietonu) who never played center and came out today and had a couple bad snaps, but he kept driving. I loved the heart that he showed. We finished the game. We played with a good spirit."

But hand it to Saint Francis. Even when the game went into the mercy rule running clock at 8:29 in the third quarter, the Saints still went at it, scoring twice to pull to within 55-26 with 2:30 left in the game.

"Today, they showed a lot of fight," Ulufale said. "They didn't quit."

The Warriors struck early and swiftly after some Saints' misfortune.

Backed up at its 6, Saint Francis lined up for a punt and the snap was high, forcing Mamiya, who also punts, to scramble to prevent either a safety or a blocked punt that could result in a TD. He only reached the 9, where the Warriors scored on first down on Simao's 9-yard run. Tyler Fitzsimmons' PAT made it 7-0 at 10:24 in the first quarter.

Saint Francis went three-and-out on its next series and Kamehameha took over at its 47. Four plays later, Simao scored on a 36-yard run to make it 14-0 at 7:55 in the first quarter.

The Saints fumbled - not muffed - the ensuing kickoff and Chad Farias returned it 22 yards for a TD, making ti 21-0 15 seconds after the previous score.

Another short-field drive allowed Kamehameha to score quickly. It needed four plays to move 46 yards before Noah Sua-Godinet hit William Young on 28-yard TD pass to make it 28-0 with 1:55 still in the first quarter.

The Saints, mostly with Mamiya handling the ball, scored on a 15-play, 92-yard drive that ended with him throwing a 2-yard TD pass to Keola Kealoha to pull them to 28-6 with 8:03 in the half.

The Warriors offense finally had a challenge when a series from their 24. Yet, they only needed four plays and the aid of a 15-yard penalty against Saint Francis to score on Simao's 3-yard TD run to make it 34-6 with 3:31 in the half. He carried the ball all four plays, totaling 61 yards.

Saint Francis showed efficiency of its own, scoring on a four-play, 67-yard drive that Mamiya capped with a 48-yard TD run to make it 34-12 with 1:22 left in the half.

Kamehameha started at its 48 on a failed onside kickoff by Saint Francis. The Warriors ended the half with no time on the clock when Sua-Godinet scored on a 3-yard run to make it 41-12.

Lyman-Risso's fumble recovery in the end zone early in the third quarter make it 48-12 to start the running clock.

Later in the quarter, backup Mahonrai Latu tossed a 62-yard TD pass to Alika Kahaulelio to make it 55-12.

Saint Francis then put together a 14-play, 79-yard drive that consumed 6:51 off the clock with Lachoneus Tautiuaki, lining up in wildcat formation, scoring on a 1-yard run to make it 55-18 with 8:23 in the game.

A little less than six minutes later, the Saints scored on Mamiya's 22-yard TD pass to Maika Teal. Kahale Ibuos ran in the 2-point conversion to pull the Saints to within 55-26.

Simao returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to end the scoring for the night.
