Kailua capitalized on five Roosevelt turnovers -- including three fumbles in the first seven minutes -- to whitewash the Rough Riders, 49-0, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football action last night.
The victory at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium improved the Surfriders to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division. The Rough Riders fell to 0-3, 0-1.
Kai Gonda's fumble recovery at the Roosevelt 28-yard line help set up Kailua's first touchdown, an 18-yard pass from Kahaku Iaea to Micah Kaimana with 5:21 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Rough Riders then lost another fumble on the ensuing kickoff return, and Robert Spencer returned the loose ball 16 yards for another score. Two plays after Roosevelt went three-and-out on the next series, Kila Zuttermeister made an acrobatic catch on a 44-yard spiral from Iaea in the front right corner of the end zone, and Sierra Kadooka's extra point made it 21-0 with 2:31 left in the first quarter.
Jarrin Young added a nifty 22-yard TD run midway through the second quarter as the Surfriders took a 28-0 halftime lead.
Mikaiah Gonda blocked a field goal attempt and returned the loose ball 59 yards for another touchdown 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, and Kadooka's PAT made it 35-0 to initiate the running clock.
