M. Kealoha 10 pts  0/4 FTs

Trailing for most of the game, the Radford Rams girls basketball team dug deep and pulled out an exciting victory over the visiting Waianae Seariders.

It wasn't a pretty victory, but Radford head coach Brandy Richardson was pleased with her players' effort. "It all comes from heart. I never doubted my team had heart, you know shots weren't falling so we were trying to pound it in the post, and hats off to them, they played with heart and that's all you can ask for."

The Rams went 12-33 from the free throw line and turned the ball over many times, which led to Waianae points.

"That's been the story of our season, during practice and during the Moanalua tournament. But we'll get better and I have all the confidence in our team."

From the onset, Radford looked jittery on offense and made just one field goal the entire quarter. Waianae played aggressive defense and converted Radford turnovers into 12 points while holding them to 2 points in first quarter.

Coach Richardson said, "Waianae, they're a scrappy team. They have a history of being a scrappy team, even back when I was playing ball."

In the second quarter, Waianae continued to exploit the Rams in transition.

Radford guard Chloe Slocumb hit a jumper to end the scoring drought with and a put back layup by Jasmine Moody forced Waianae to call time out. With 1:48 remaining, Waianae was called for a technical foul for an illegal substitution and Slocumb converted the free throws to cut the deficit to 6, but the Seariders led at halftime 24-17.

In the third quarter, Waianae built off of the success from the first half and led by as many as 15 points. Cayshia Alapai found Raegina Atiga for a buzzer beating lay up to put the Seariders up 39-24.

In the fourth quarter, Radford used a 10-0 run to chip away at the lead. Radford guard Jahnel Rubio hit a 3 pointer and guard Felcianna Vazquez added 2 free throws to trim the lead. Radford forward/center Korie Johnson scored in the 6 points in the paint, 2 of those points came from a put back layup.

Rubio said, "Everytime we got together, we said "keep pushing, keep your head in the game, don't give up" and we played with heart tonight."

Radford used a full court press and Rubio hit another 3 to cut Waianae's lead to 1, 43-42.

"Our team worked together, we kept swinging the ball to get open shots" said Rubio.

With 2:53 remaining, Rubio hit her third 3 of the quarter to put the Rams up for good.

"I was waiting on the side because no one was guarding me, I told my teammate before to swing the ball to the opposite side to get the defenders on the ball side and swing it back and I will be open for that three" said Rubio.

The Rams converted free throws down the stretch to seal the game.

Richardson said, "Winning is nice. More than anything it's for the girls. Hopefully getting a ‘W' under our belts can take care of the little things, even practice can give our girls the confidence that they are good basketball players."

Makanamakai Kealoha and Raegina Atiga led the Seariders with 10 points apiece.
