Ann Kang tourney starts Thursday

Perennial California powers highlight the 29th Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

The 24-team, three-bracket tournament runs Aug. 11 to 13 at host Iolani School's upper and lower gyms. Some matches will be held Aug. 11 and 13 at Farrington's Richard T. Kitamura Fieldhouse.

Teams from California are: Huntington Beach, La Canada, La Reina, Albany, Edison, Mater Dei, Mira Costa, Palisades Charter, Pales Verdes, Santa Monica and Newport Harbor.

Teams from Texas are: Memorial and St. Stephens.

Hawaii teams in the tournament are: host Iolani, Kaiser, Pearl City, St. Francis, Moanalua, Kahuku, Mid-Pacific, Maryknoll, Farrington, Hawaii Baptist and Radford.

The tournament is broken into Gold, Silver and Bronze brackets based on level of competition.

Iolani coach Jenic Tumaneng said teams such as Newport Harbor, Mira Costa and Mater Dei have a number of three-year letter winners bringing a lot of experience to the court.

The Hawaii contingent is expected to be strong with defending Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku and runner-up Moanalua, as well as defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II champion Hawaii Baptist.

The tournament is named for long-time Iolani teacher and coach Ann Kang, who passed in 2003 after suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students age 8 though high school.
