HAWAII KAI-Running backs Abraham Silva and Tyler Taumua combined for 356 yards rushing and five touchdowns to lead Farrington over Leilehua, 52-26, Saturday night at Kaiser Stadium to earn the final Division I state tournament berth.

The Governors (9-2), fifth in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Power Rankings, will play Kealakehe on the Big Island in an opening-round game of the First Hawaiian Bank-sponsored tournament 7 p.m. Friday.

The Waveriders (10-1) captured the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I title Saturday night with a 40-22 win against Hilo at Kealakehe. The contest was resumed with 58 seconds left in the first half. That's when the game was suspended on Oct. 27 because of the tsunami warning generated from an earthquake in Canada.

The Mules (7-4) ended their five-year string of state tournament appearances.

Silva rushed for 187 yards on 27 carries with TD runs of 66 and 7 yards. Taumua had 169 yards on 20 carries with TD runs of 60, 59 and 5 yards. Taumua also had a 32-yard TD reception.

But the difference might have came late in the first quarter, when Leilehua quarterback Justin Jenks was drilled after an apparent pass interception by Moalatoutai Heimuli. But the interception was nullified on a roughing the passer foul on Farrington, but Jenks had to leave the game by ambulance after sustaining a neck injury, Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said. The game was delayed about 20 minutes. First responders on the scene were from the neighboring fire department before the ambulance arrived. Jenks had a similar injury the week before against Kahuku, but was cleared to play this game, Tokuda said.

"Not having the guy with all the quality reps is going to hurt us offensively," Tokuda said. "Not to take away anything from Farrington's defense. They did a good job of bottling us up in the second half."

"Anytime you lose your starting quarterback (it's going to have a negative effect)," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said, "especially in their offense. It like us losing our running backs."

Sophomore Fletcher Washington, just up from the junior varsity, replaced Jenks and guided the Mules on a score, a seven-yard TD pass to Keoni Piceno that tied the game at 13.

"He's definitely going to grow from this experience," Tokuda said.

Jenks was hot early, hitting three of his first four passes, including a 54-yard strike to Piceno on the Mules' first series of the game. But Leilehua missed the PAT to keep it 6-0.

A failed onside kick gave Farrington the ball at the Mules' 44. Seven plays later, Montana Liana hit Tyler Liana on a nine-yard TD pass. Justin Tamashiro's PAT gave Farrington a 7-6 lead with six minutes, eight seconds in the first quarter.

The Mules drove to the Farrington 15 on their next series, but Beti Alex's 32-yard field goal attempt was blocked. The Governors took over at the Leilehua 22 and needed just three plays to score, the bulk coming on Taumua's 60-yard TD run to increase Farrington's lead to 13-6 with 1:06 in the first quarter.

Leilehua tied the game on Washington's first career TD pass with 10:38 in the second quarter.

But Syndreck Dsio's 38-yard kickoff return to the Leilehua 32 set up Liana's TD pass to Taumua on first down to put the Govs ahead, 20-13, with 10:14 in the half.

The Mules tied the game at 20, when lineman Robert McCarthy returned a fumble 34 yards for a touchdown. It was his third TD of the season from a fumble return.

Leilehua took the lead for the last time after a high snap from punt formation by Farrington gave the Mules the ball at the Govs' 7. After a holding penalty pushed the Mules back to the 16, Washington hit Andrew Sesepasara on a pass for a TD, but Leilehua's pass on a 2-point conversion try was incomplete, but the Mules led 26-20 with 5:29 left in the half.

Farrington got the ball back at Leilehua's 49 after a Mules' punt. A holding penalty by Farrington moved the ball back to the Govs' 41, where Taumua made several cut backs en route to a 59-yard TD run. Tamashiro's PAT gave Farrington a 27-26 lead at the half.

Leilehua received the second-half kickoff, but on first down, Jacob McEnroe returned a Washington interception 25 yards for a TD to increase Farrington's lead to 34-26.

Leilehua's offense continued to labor without Jenks, while Farrington continued to run successfully.

Silva's 66-yard TD run with 4:34 in the third quarter made it 40-26. Taumua's five-yard TD run with 4:39 in the fourth quarter increased Farrington's lead to 46-26 and Silva's seven-yard TD run with 1:17 closed the scoring for the game.

In his debut, Washington was 16 of 37 for 153 yards and two TDs with one interception. He also was sacked four times, twice by Austin Faumui.
