Only one playoff berth to be determined in OIA Red

Division titles are still at stake and postseason life is on the line for Kapolei and 'Aiea in the final regular season weekend of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red.

The Hurricanes (2-3) and Na Alii (1-4) will play 7 p.m. Friday for the Western Division's sixth and final berth for the 12-team OIA Red Tournament. The spectrum is wide for the Hurricanes.

"We can finish third or get demoted to the White," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said.

Hernandez said if Kapolei loses, it faces demotion to the White. Technically, it could be spared if a White team declines promotion. These decisions are made in the offseason.

The other 11 berths have been clinched. Castle eliminated Kaimuki (0-6) in the East last weekend.

Although Waipahu (2-3) could finish in a three-way tie by losing to Leiehua with 'Aiea beating Kapolei, the Marauders would have the tie-breaker because they beat the Hurricanes and Na Alii.

Mililani can clinch the West title outright and the division's top seed by beating Waipahu.

The winner of Wai'anae-Leilehua is at worst No. 2 in the West. Leilehua is the only other team that could get the top seed with a Mililani loss because of its win against the Trojans. The Seariders lost to the Trojans, who will be the No. 1 seed if they both end up 4-2.

The top two seeds from each division draw first-round byes for the tournament.

Idle Campbell (3-3) is somewhere between No. 3 and No. 5, pending combinations of other teams' wins and losses.

Like Mililani, Kahuku needs to win to take its division title outright and the No. 1 seed.

If Moanalua wins, it could force either a three-way tie, if Farrington beats Kailua, or take the No. 1 seed from Kahuku with a Surfriders' win.

Farrington needs to win to be assured of the No. 2 seed.

Regardless of the outcomes, the three occupy the top three seeds. Should they end up in a three-way tie for first, a coin toss would determine the odd team out. Then the seeding reverts to head-to-head with the remaining two teams. The common opponents tie-breaker is bypassed because each of the three beat the same opponents.

If Kailua loses and Castle beats McKinley, all are 2-4. Their common opponent wins are against Kaimuki and each beat one but not the other. A coin toss will determine seeding.

In the first round, the fifth-place team visits the fourth-round team and the sixth-round team travels to the third-round team.

In the White, Kaiser (6-1), which has a bye this week, is the only one to clinch one of four playoff berths.

Radford (5-1) can clinch a berth with a win when it hosts Nanakuli (4-2).

Nanakuli, Kalani, Pearl City and Kalaheo also are still alive for three of the four available berths.

East

Kahuku (5-0) at Moanalua (4-1), 6 p.m. Saturday

After its much-anticipated game with Farrington last weekend, the Red Raiders can't have a let down against the host Na Menehune.

Moanalua's highly-touted defensive lineman Scott Pagano is someone Kahuku must reckon with, but he can't be a one-man show against a Red Raiders' team that has multiple threats.

Farrington (4-1) at Kailua (2-3), 7 p.m. Friday (OC 16)

The Governors will try to rebound from their loss to Kahuku against the host Surfriders.

With its strong tandem backfield of Abraham Silva and Tyler Taumua, Farrington has rolled up nearly three times as much rushing yardage (252.7 per game) to passing (89 per game). The Surfriders have been more balanced at 120.1 yards passing to 115 yards rushing per game.

Castle (1-4) vs. McKinley (2-3) at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium, 5 p.m. Saturday

The Tigers can claim the East's fourth seed with a win, while the Knights can hope for a three-way tie with a win and a Kailua loss. That leaves seeding order to a coin toss because the teams would have common opponent wins (each against Kaimuki) and each would have beaten one but not the other.

Bye-Kaimuki (0-6). Done for the season.

West

Waipahu (2-3) at Mililani (4-1), 7 p.m. Friday at John Kauinana Stadium.

The Marauders have been in every regular season game this season; their three losses have been by a combined nine points. But they will have to keep Trojans' QB Jarin Morikawa in check. He is Division I's leading passer.

But the Trojans must contain QB Kaimi Paredes and all-purpose Dylan Pakau. Pakau is a multi-position threat.

Kapolei (2-3) at Aiea, (1-4), 7 p.m. Friday

Na Alii, whose defense was key at the start of the season, have allowed 98 points the past three games after its stunning 18-16 win against Leilehua.

The Hurricanes upset Waianae and Campbell to put themselves in contention for a playoff berth. With a  Waianae loss, Kapolei can earn the No. 3 seed because it beat the Seariders and Sabers.

Waianae (3-2) at Leilehua (3-2), 7 p.m. Saturday at Hugh Yoshida Stadium (OC 16)

The Mules will need to stop the dive or that will be the Seariders' only option all night. But Waianae has to contend with Leilehua's passing game behind Justin Jenks, the Red's third-leading passer at 192.8 yards per game. The Mules' two QBs - the other is Levi Castanares - each complete 65 percent of their passes, both highs in the Red for passers with more than 40 attempts. But the Mules will have to keep Waianae DL Kennedy Tulimasealii out of their backfield.

Bye-Campbell (3-3)

White

Kalani (4-2) at Pearl City (4-3) at Bino Neves Stadium

The Falcons are going for their first winning season in division since 1972 (5-3), but the Chargers are hot, having won four in a row after dropping their first four games (including non-league).

Someone's defense will have to come up big because both have strong passing games. Pearl City's Brock Teixeira leads the White with 1,584 yards and 20 TDs, while Kalani's Noah Brum 1,369 yards and 12 TDs.

Waialua (0-6) at Roosevelt (0-6), 6 p.m. Friday at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Both are fighting to stay out of the cellar.

Anuenue (2-4) vs. Kalaheo (3-3) at Kailua High, 5 p.m. Saturday

This game is more critical to the Mustangs, who have to keep Na Koa RB Kainalu Kaleo from having a field day. He has 1,236 yards rushing and 13 TDs.

Nanakuli (4-2) at Radford (5-1), 6 p.m. Saturday at John E. Valasco Stadium

A critical game for both to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Golden Hawks will have their wings occupied trying to contain Rams' QB Cody Lui-Yuen, who has 1,698 yards passing and 20 TDs.

Bye-Kaiser (6-1)

ILH

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu is in a crossover this weekend. The Division Ones are hoping to feast on the Division Twos.

Iolani (2-2) at Punahou (4-0), 3:15 p.m. Friday at Alexander Field

The top two QBs of the league are featured in Punahou's Larry Tuileta (1,174 yards, 13 TDs) and Iolani's Reece Foy (744 yards, 10 TDs).

Damien (0-4) vs. Kamehameha (2-2), 4:45 p.m. at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.
Pac-Five (1-3) vs Saint Louis (3-1), 7:30 p.m. at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

The D-2s will have their hands full.
