Pair of top-ten matchups highlight Week Five

A pair of top-ten matchups in the Red West Conference highlight the week five schedule in the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

The sixth- and seventh-ranked teams in this week’s ScoringLive/OC16 Power Rankings will clash Friday when Mililani visits Campbell in a televised game from Ewa Beach. Also Friday, No. 4 Leilehua hosts 10th-ranked Aiea at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

Meanwhile, top-ranked Kahuku hosts McKinley Friday and unranked Moanalua aims for the upset at No. 2 Farrington Saturday in the Red East Conference. In the White Conference, Anuenue visits Kaiser Friday and the top four teams will square off Saturday when Radford plays host to Kalaheo and Kalani visits Nanakuli.

Here is a closer look at each of the 10 games on the OIA schedule this weekend:

OAHU INTERSCHOLASTIC ASSOCIATION

Red East Conference

McKinley at No. 1 Kahuku - Friday, 6 p.m.
The Red Raiders (2-0, 1-0), who are coming off a dominating 56-7 win over Kailua, will be playing just their third game of the season when it hosts the Tigers (2-1, 1-0) at Carleton E. Weimer Field. Senior RB Aofaga Wily carried just eight times last week for 121 yards and two touchdowns and QB Lasi Livai threw for two other scores against the Surfriders. McKinley, who is coming off a 43-22 win over La Salle in Corvallis, Ore. last week, begins a tough three-week stretch of its schedule. The Tigers play Farrington next week and Moanalua the week after.

Moanalua vs. No. 2 Farrington - Saturday, 5 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium
After dropping their first two games, Na Menehune (2-2, 2-0) have rebounded with wins over Kailua and Castle the past two weeks. Defensive lineman Scott Pagano, who has verbally committed to Clemson, will be challenged by Farrington’s massive offensive line. Junior WR Donald Lambert caught seven passes for 102 yards, including three touchdowns, against the Knights last week. The Governors (4-0, 2-0) have pounded their last two opponents, Castle and Kaimuki, by scores of 44-3 and 52-0, respectively. Senior RB Amo Silva leads all Division I rushers statewide with 629 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Kailua vs. Kaimuki - Saturday, 6 p.m. at Kaiser Stadium
Both squads are still winless more than a month into the season and a win would go a long way in playoff positioning. The top five in both of the seven-team East and West conferences qualify for the OIA Red Tournament. Castle, which has a bye this week, is also 0-2 in league play. The Surfriders (0-4, 0-2) have had trouble finding the end zone, averaging just 7.5 points per game. Senior RB Jarrin Young (5.3 yards per rush) scored the lone touchdown in the loss to Kahuku with his 43-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs (0-4, 0-2) have allowed no less than 31 points in each game and opponents are averaging over 435 yards per game against them.

Red West Conference

No. 6 Mililani at No. 7 Campbell - Friday, 7 p.m. (OC16)
The Trojans (3-1, 1-1) will be looking to rebound off a 17-13 loss at Leilehua last week, in which they committed five second-half turnovers. Defense continues to lead the way for Mililani, which allows an average of 13 points by opponents. Senior WR Ekolu Ramos caught both scoring passes against the Mules. In one game, QB Jarin Morikawa’s TD-to-INT ratio went from 4-to-1 to 2-to-1. The Sabers (4-0, 2-0), who are one of 10 unbeatens remaining statewide, have played in some tight games already this season. Campbell beat Kailua in week two, 13-7, then edged Aiea, 7-0, in a week-three overtime thriller and held off Waipahu, 39-34, last week. Senior DE Amate Savusa returned two fumbles for touchdowns and had one sack against the Marauders.

No. 10 Aiea at No. 4 Leilehua - Friday, 7 p.m.
After an idle week four, Na Alii (2-1, 0-1) hit the road for another tough test in the Red West. Aiea’s defense is statistically the best in the state, allowing just 70.7 yards per game by its opponents. In fact, despite winning the game, Campbell could only muster 42 yards of total offense when the teams met two weeks ago. Junior RB Mana Kaahanui (5.6 yards per rush) has five rushing touchdowns this season. The Mules (3-0, 1-0), who have won their three games by a combined 14 points, are allowing more yards defensively (210.3) than it averages offensively (196), but they are plus-11 on turnover ratio. Leilehua has forced seven fumbles and six interceptions, while it was turned it over just twice on interceptions.

Waianae at Waipahu - Friday, 7 p.m.
The Seariders (1-3, 0-2) are desperately in need of a win in the rugged Red West. A loss against the Marauders (1-3, 1-1) would mean the best Waianae could finish is 3-3 in league play. It won’t come easy, however, as the Seariders play Campbell, Aiea and Leilehua to close out the regular season. Waianae, which allowed 357 yards of total offense in a loss to Kapolei last week, has scored just nine points and allowed 52 in two Red West games. Waipahu, which will be playing its fourth consecutive home game at the Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex, finishes with three road games at Aiea, Leilehua and Mililani. Senior WR Dylan Pakau (31.5 yards per catch) caught his fourth touchdown pass of the season and also scored on a punt return in a loss to Campbell last week.

White Conference

Anuenue at Kaiser - Friday, 6 p.m.
Na Koa (1-3, 1-2) suffered a 49-27 loss to Kalani last week in a shootout. The teams combined for 987 yards of total offense, including 374 rushing by Anuenue. Senior RB Kainalu Kaleo, who leads the state with 775 rushing yards, was limited to 57 yards on nine carries against the Falcons, but RB’s Anuenue Tui and Malaeloa Liua picked up his slack with 138 and 137 rushing yards, respectively. The Cougars (2-2, 2-1), have rebounded with wins over Pearl City and Roosevelt after a narrow 21-20 loss to Kalaheo in week two. Senior RB Kai Gonda scored touchdowns on a pass reception, fumble return and kickoff return and senior WR Christian Clapp caught three passes for 117 yards and a touchdown against the Rough Riders last week.

Pearl City at Roosevelt - Friday, 7 p.m.
This game features a pair of winless teams with first-year head coaches in Pearl City’s David Hallums and Roosevelt’s Jeff Azuma. The Chargers (0-4, 0-3) lost a 34-28 decision at Nanakuli last week, in which senior WR Daicorri Briscoe registered nine catches for 198 yards with two touchdowns and junior SB Tanner Tokunaga added eight grabs for 148 yards and a score. The Rough Riders (0-2, 0-2), who have been outscored by opponents, 105 to 7, will be playing just their third game of the season. Junior RB Pono Kini ran for 108 yards on 10 carries with one touchdown in a loss to Kaiser last week.

Kalaheo at Radford - Saturday, 6 p.m.
The Mustangs (3-1, 3-0) feature the White Conference’s best offense, averaging 427 yards of total offense, while the Rams (3-0, 2-0) are tops defensively, allowing just 144.5 yards per game. Kalaheo has won three straight following an opening-week loss to Damien. Senior RB Willie Lynch ran wild for 200 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries and senior WR Shem Sukumaran had four catches for 120 yards and a score in a win over Waialua last week. Radford is coming off a 21-17 win over Crescent Valley in Corvallis, Ore. last week. The Rams have outscored opponents 96 to 6 in two league games and average 407 yards offensively per game.

Kalani at Nanakuli - Saturday, 6 p.m.
The Falcons (2-1, 2-0) have proven to be prolific offensively, scoring 82 points in two league wins, but they also allow nearly 300 points and 28 points per game. Senior RB Gavin Kim rushed for 103 yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries in a win over Anuenue last week, in which Kalani racked up 462 offensive yards. The Golden Hawks (2-1, 2-1) are enjoying a resurgence on the gridiron this season. However, just four teams qualify for the OIA White Tournament and Nanakuli is currently tied with Kaiser for the fourth spot, behind Kalaheo, Radford and Kalani. Senior RB Khade Paris scored three rushing touchdowns and junior DB Jaryn Paris had a late interception to seal the win over Pearl City last week.
