On most nights that Kaiser takes the field, you'll likely find Kai Gonda in on just about every play.

"I just do whatever I can. I play running back and I just run the ball as hard as I can. And I play safety and I just try to play my hardest every play, every game." said Gonda.

But in a contest that was decided early on against Roosevelt, he had roughly half the amount of time he would usually, though it wouldn't appear that way by looking at the score line.

In just one half of play, the 5-foot-11, 190 pound senior found his way into the endzone every which way in a 36-7 win over the Rough Riders, catching a 31 yard pass from Makana Lyman, adding a 4 yard fumble recovery for another touchdown and running back a kickoff 72 yards for a score.

"It came after a safety, so they (Roosevelt) had the option to either punt or kick." said Gonda of his kick return.

"So they punted it and I caught the ball and the blocks just formed really nicely so there were a lot of holes. So I just hit the hole and there was an opening and I was gone."

Gonda has scored in all four games for the Cougars this season, and leads the team with 36 points scored thus far, good enough for third best in the state. But his role as a leader and motivator to him are much more valuable than any trips he might make to the endzone.

"It seemed like our first two games we weren't really that motivated, and I just want to (continue to) motivate them as much as I can." remarked Gonda.

And perhaps Gonda's motivational prescription is just what the doctor ordered.

Since that slow start, the Cougars have rebounded nicely, posting back-to-back wins heading into this Friday's homecoming against Anuenue.

"Its homecoming so we gotta get this win... its important to us seniors cause its our last homecoming, but its just a big game for us." added Gonda.
