'Iolani, Punahou advance in Kang Invitational


 



'Iolani and Punahou each went 3-0 on Day 1 of the Ann Kang Invitational Girls Volleyball Tournament, including victories over California opponents.

The 16-team tournament, which features 10 teams from California and six from Hawai'i, continues today with matches starting from 8 a.m. through 8 p.m. at 'Iolani's Upper and Lower Gyms.

'Iolani began the action yesterday with a 25-7, 25-10 sweep of Pomona Catholic, then later defeated Hawai'i Baptist, 25-22, 25-13, and Santa Monica, 25-21, 25-19. Punahou, the defending state champion, defeated Chaminade (Calif.), 25-11, 25-10, Mid-Pacific, 25-20, 25-14, and Branson, 25-11, 25-13.

Perennial power Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.) also went 3-0, with victories over Rim of the World, 25-15, 25-20, Castle, 25-12, 25-17, and Moanalua, 25-22, 25-15.

Orange County contender Los Alamitos also went 3-0, with victories over Kahuku, 25-16, 25-16, Kaiser, 25-16, 25-19, and Oaks Christian, 25-16, 21-25, 15-4.

In other action, HBA defeated swept Pomona Catholic, 25-17, 25-16, Santa Monica, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13, Oaks Christian outlasted Kaiser, 25-20, 31-33, 15-11, Castle defeated Rim of the World, 25-21, 11-25, 15-10, Kahuku swept Oaks Christian, 25-23, 25-20 and Kaiser, 25-8, 25-18, MPI swept Branson, 25-21, 25-10, and Chaminade, 25-15, 25-8, and Moanalua def. Castle, 25-18, 25-20, and hung on to defeat Rim of the world, 25-16, 25-26.
