California power Mater Dei in 'Iolani summer tournament


Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) High School, which won a record ninth California Interscholastic Federaton boys basketball state championship this past March, has brought three teams to compete in this week's 'Iolani Summer League Tournament.
"Mater Dei 2" will face 'Iolani's Division II team at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by "Mater Dei 3" vs. Moanalua at 8 p.m. and "Mater Dei 1" vs. Maryknoll at 9 p.m. All three games will be at 'Iolani's lower gym.
The 14-team tournament's first round continues Thursday with McKinley vs. Punahou at 7 p.m., Lanakila Baptist vs. Saint Louis at 8 p.m. and Academy of the Pacific vs. Kamehameha at 9 p.m. Those three games will be played in 'Iolani's upper gym.
'Iolani's Division I team and the Hawai'i Raiders all-star select team have first-round byes and will begin tournament play on Friday. 'Iolani will play Moanalua at 5:30 p.m. in the upper gym, and the Raiders will face the AOP-Kamehameha winner at 7:30 in the lower gym.
The tournament concludes Saturday with games starting at 2 p.m. in both gyms.
Admission will be charged each day.
