Lunas, Buffanblu win team titles at Officials' tourney

WAHIAWA - A week after defending its home turf, the Lahainaluna boys wrestling team came, saw and conquered Oahu.

The Lunas, despite having no individual titlists, held off numerous teams from across the state to win the Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association Scholarship Tournament at Leilehua's Paul T. Kobayashi Gymnasium Saturday.

Lahainaluna's 11 place-finishers totaled 194 points to stave off runner-up Kamehameha, which racked up 162 points. Campbell was third with 146.5, Mililani fourth with 136 and Punahou was fifth with 115.

"I'm really shocked, to be honest with you," said Lunas' coach Todd Hayase when notified of his team's victory. "It feels good and it's exciting to see some of our younger freshmen and sophomore wrestlers having some success, but at the same time, this is the preseason and I'm a believer in 'It's not how you start, it's how you finish.'"

Kahi Tihada's runner-up finish at 114 pounds led the way for Lahainaluna. Christian Carbajal (120), Nathan Inovejas (140) and Giovani Perez (160) each placed third and Ferdinand Magbual (135), Justin Taylor (171) and Joshua Coston (189) took fourth in their divisions. Also, Christian Balagso (108) and Chanse Uyeda (152) were fifth and Jansen Panlasigui (114) and Wayne Alibin (215) added sixth-place finishes for the Lunas.

"It's shocking because this is not our full squad and not all of our 'A' guys," said Hayase, who brought four freshmen on the trip. "It's just exciting to see some of these freshmen and sophomores having some success, but it's really all just about getting matches and to see some of them getting in there and placing - some of them were surprised themselves."

Hayase played down the team title for his Lunas, noting that with the state tournament is still over two months away.

"A lot of these other schools - just like us - I know this is not their full team, so what we saw here today, it's not what you'll see in March," said Hayase, noting the weight-descent plans that most wrestlers follow. "Most wrestlers are not yet at the weight they want to be. Right now, everybody is up, so it's going to be a lot of moving."

Still, it was his team's second team title in as many weeks. Lahainaluna also won the Maui Invitational Tournament, which is held at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Reigning state champion Punahou held off Punahou and Kamehameha-Hawaii for the girls' team crown. The Buffanblu were paced by first-place finishers Thai Hao Sloan at 98 pounds and Mindy Chow at 130 to accumulate 135.5 points. The Chargers were second with 115 points, Kamehameha-Hawaii third with 108, Farrington fourth with 85 and Mililani had 79 points to place fifth.

Zoe Hernandez took second at 140 pounds and Nicole Taniguchi third at 114 for the Buffanblu. Kimberly Mesick (98), Holly Ann Kogachi (108) and Kori Lynn Kunioka (120) were fifth in their respective divisions and Tiara Kaye added a sixth-place finish at 220 for Punahou.

Sloan pinned Kalaheo's Likolehua Manuel two minutes and 27 seconds into their 108-pound final while Chow finished her 130-pound final at the 4:46 mark with a pin of Aiea's Elizabeth Chong.

Despite the team title, Buffanblu coach Matt Oney was hardly satisfied.

"We're never happy, but we wrestled to the level that we're at right now," Oney said. "This is a really good learning opportunity for our kids to figure out what type of wrestler they want to be in the next three months."

With Punahou hosting the two-day, all-girls Pa'ani Challenge starting Monday, it will be a quick turn-around for most.

"What it does do though is give us more and more experience and we need that extra work," Oney said. "This upcoming tournament will give us an opportunity to continue to try to work on the execution of what we've practiced."

A total of 327 boys and 135 girls competed in 847 matches over two days. The proceeds from the tournament will go toward scholarships for team scorekeepers and managers. The HWOA tournament - widely regarded as the top preseason tournament statewide - has generated nearly $30,000 over the last 11 years.
