EWA BEACH - With both teams breaking in new quarterbacks, defense dominated in Campbell's 14-12 win against Pac-Five Saturday night in non-league high school football at the Sabers' campus.

The Sabers held their breaths as they watched the usually reliable Brendan Sagucio's 30-yard field goal attempt sail wide left with 10 seconds left in the game. Sagucio booted nine field goals last season, five from more than 30 yards out. He also missed a PAT.

"It's one of those games," Pac-Five coach Kip Botelho said. "We practice it everyday. We just have to get better."

But really, the miss wasn't the difference.

Both offenses with new quarterbacks labored to get any consistency. Pac-Five junior Jack Foster, playing sparingly behind PJ Minaya last season, was 24 of 41 for 172 yards, but was intercepted twice, first by defensive back Jyrell Umali and then by linebacker Giovanni Stevenson. Foster also was sacked three times, once each by Lopisoni Mallei, Kelaiah Fonoti and Stevenson.

"It's just going through some growing pains as far as the quarterback," Botelho said. "But he'll be OK. He made some good decisions. We just have to get better. Too much mistakes offensively."

Meanwhile, Campbell sophomore Justin Tago was 10 of 15 for 58 yards and was intercepted by Kelly Meguro. He was sacked twice, once by Shaun Alosada and Sosiua Havea. The Sabers' only offensive TD came on a 15-yard screen pass from senior Nilo Agbayani-Omalza to Nicholas Molia-Penitusi. The Sabers also had five mis-snaps from center from shotgun formation, losing the ball twice, totaling 39 yards in losses.

Moreover, both teams combined for 23 penalties. The Wolfpack (1-1) were called 12 times for 101 yards, while the Sabers were hit 11 times for 55 yards, six for encroachment, three for false stars and two for delay of game.

Pac-Five has another non-league game next week at Kailua to fine tune.

"Our strength right now is defense," Botelho said. "We're going to ride that side and might be a little more conservative offensively."

But the Sabers (1-1) open their Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West season Friday at Waianae with concerns on the offensive line, which has two returning starters.

"We have to figure how to make our protection easier," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "We might have to narrow our playbook down."

"We definitely have the talent. We have the skills. Our two slots are the most skilled we've ever had."

The Sabers are hoping to get starting center JunJun Levbag back from injury to cut down on the mis-snaps in the shotgun.

"That's so crucial for us for what we do," Amosa said of the team's four-receiver spread offense."

What worries Amosa is that he anticipates Waianae will have a nose guard on the center.

"We have to fix that as soon as we can," Amosa said. "Or we might just have to (play the QB) underneath (the center). Our whole package can be done from under the center."

The Wolfpack took advantage of one of those bad snaps to get on the board first. Pac-Five took over at the Sabers' 37 and on first down, Foster hit wide receiver Everett Kim on a streak to the right side for a 37-yard TD pass. Sagucio missed the PAT to keep it at 6-0.

The Sabers took the lead late in the second quarter. After the Wolfpack punted, the Sabers took over from the Pac-Five 47 and on third down, Agbayani-Omalza tossed a screen pass to Molia-Penitusi, who dodged the Wolfpack defense to complete the 15-yard TD with 30 seconds left in the half. Jaelan Subia-Etrata's PAT gave the Sabers a 7-6 lead into the half.

The third quarter was reversal of fortune for the Sabers.

The Jordan Doi blocked a Campbell punt to let the Wolfpack take over at the Sabers' 7. But a defensive stand aided by two false start penalties forced Sagucio to try a 31-yard field goal that was blocked and Dylan Garcia returned the loose ball 67 yards for a TD with 5:27 left in the third quarter. Subia-Etrata's PAT made it 14-6.

Late in the third quarter, the Sabers lost the ball on another bad snap at their own 20. Four plays later, running back Darius Anderson scored from the 2 to pulled to 14-12. Foster's pass was intercepted on the 2-point try to preserve the Sabers' lead.

A little more than halfway into the fourth quarter, Stevenson intercepted a Foster pass at the Pac-Five 40 with 4:17 left.

"I did a quick slide and dropped back," Stevenson said.

But the Sabers squandered the chance to run out the clock, as the Sabers lost a fumble after five-yard gain on a pass play, giving Pac-Five the ball at its 43 with 2:50 left. The Wolfpack drove to the Sabers' 13 and faced fourth and three with 15 seconds left. But Sagucio's 30-yard field goal went wide left with 10 seconds left in the game.
