WAILUKU-The unstoppable Keelan Ewaliko combined for 221 yards in total offense, scoring three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 42 seconds left and Baldwin stunned Farrington, 28-24, Friday night in the opening-round of the First Hawaiian Bank Division I state football tournament.

A War Memorial Football Stadium crowd of about 3,000 went wild in the nail-biting finish when the 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior quarterback scored on a dramatic 33-yard run down the left sideline, breaking tackles en route to the end zone for the winning score that will send the Bears (9-1), ranked seventh in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Power Rankings, into Friday's semifinal against No. 3 Punahou at Aloha Stadium.

"Farrington's a great football team," Baldwin coach A.J. Roloos said. "They were ranked up there in the state. This is something special for the kids because nobody really gave them a chance. The coaches kept believing in them, kept telling them you gotta believe and believe and believe. They believed it and came out on top."

It was as tough a loss for the Governors (10-2) as last week's to Kahuku for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red title. Farrington had been ranked first for five weeks before the loss to the Red Raiders.

"It's one of those things when you know you're so capable (of winning) and then you fall short, you kind of want to kick yourself," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said.

The Bears snapped a three-year skid of losing in the state opening-round at home, all to Leilehua. The last time Baldwin advanced to the semifinals was in 2007, when it beat the Governors, 26-14. Of course, the Bears lost to their nemesis Mules in the semifinals.

In a display of sportsmanship at its best, Farrington linebacker Semo Sila sought Ewaliko after the initial handshaking to congratulate him. They posed for pictures for Baldwin supporters.

"I see a lot of hard work in that kid," Sila said. "He's just a great athlete."

Ewaliko had a hand in all of the Bears' scores, passing for 109 yards, including a 12-yard TD pass to Kaiana Camvel and rushing for 112 yards, including TD runs of 17, 1 and 33.

"I thought I was going to get tackled, but I just told myself, 'I'm not going to go down,'" Ewaliko said of the 33-yard TD. "'I gotta make this for my team, do this for the boys, do this for everyone.' With all my heart, I just ran."

The Bears had just forced the Governors to punt from their 22 with under a minute left. Isei Finau's 24-yard return to the Farrington 29 gave the Bears great field position. They only needed three plays to score. On third-and-14, Ewaliko dropped back, couldn't find an open receiver, so he scrambled to his left and just kept running down the left sideline. With 53 seconds left before the snap, Ewalko stayed near the sidelines in case he needed to go out of bounds to stop the clock.

"But there was no one in front of me," Ewaliko said. "So I said, 'You know what? I'm going to take this all the way, brah."

"That was a great effort on his part," Okimoto said. "He made about three or four people miss. He finished the play. I know he's been doing that all year; he did it the right time."

The game changed leads six times, four in the second half. The Governors had taken the lead 24-21 with 5:01 left when RB Tyler Taumua, who led all rushers with 157 yards on 27 carries, scored his fourth TD of the game.

After Baldwin took the ensuing kickoff, it had to punt the ball back to Farrington, which took over from its 24 with 3:27 left. The Governors appeared they would be able to control the ball after Abraham Silva's first-down run on second-and-7 was nullified with a penalty that backed the Governors to their 19. But Farrington only got three yards after that and was forced to punt. Finau's return set up the Bears' winning score.

"That holding penalty came at the right time for Baldwin," Okimoto said. "It set up back. The made a good play and we had to punt. If not for that, I think we would have run the clock out."

Aside from the penalty, the Bears made some crucial stops against a Governors' team that racked up 238 yards rushing for the night.

"We just had to believe in our D-line, put some pressure on the QB," Baldwin linebacker B.J. Wilhelm-Ioane said. "That's what we did and we came up with it."

The Governors took the opening kickoff and started at their 8 and promptly moved 92 yards on nine plays with Taumua scoring on a four-yard run with 8:25 left in the first quarter. But Keanu Foki missed the PAT to keep it 6-0.

The Bears didn't score until the end of the first quarter. Branden Kaupe's 27-yard punt return to the Baldwin 42 set up an easy seven-play drive that ended with Ewaliko's 17-yard TD run on a draw. Dean Phillips' PAT gave Baldwin a 7-6 lead with no time showing on the clock to end the first quarter.

Baldwin's defense made its first crucial stand of the game midway through the second quarter. After an interception by Timmy Langdrik at the Bears' 23, Baldwin could not muster any yardage and had to punt. Punter Posoni Tasini mishandled the snap and his punt was blocked and the Govs took over at the Bears' 19. But the Bears' defense, aided by a by a sack by Vili Tolutau, forced Farrington to punt from the Bears' 30, an unusual move that resulted in a touchback.

The Bears fumbled the ball on their next series, only to get the ball back on Abraham Reinhardt's interception. at the Bears' 36. That led to Ewaliko's 12-yard TD pass to Kaiama Camvel to increase the Bears' lead to 14-6 with 23 seconds left in the half.

Baldwin received the second-half kickoff, but ended up punting. Farrington scored on its first series of the half on a one-yard TD run by Taumua. The Govs tried to run in the 2-point conversion, but failed, keeping it 14-12.

The Bears had to punt on their next series, but this time the snap was low to Tasini and Farrington recovered the ball at the Bears' 25. On second-and-5, Taumua scored went up the middle, spun out of the logjam and went down the left side for a 20-yard TD run with 3:43 left in the third quarter. Again the Govs missed the PAT, but they had an 18-14 lead.

Baldwin regained the lead early in the fourth quarter on Ewaliko's 12-yard TD run to put the Bears ahead, 21-18. That scoring drive came after Farrington lost a fumble at its own 16.

The Governors marched 80 yards in 15 plays on their next series and regained the lead, 24-21, with 5:01 left on Taumua's one-yard TD run.
