'EWA BEACH - Nicole Arata's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh rallied Campbell past Wai'anae, 6-5, in the opener of an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West softball doubleheader at the Sabers' field.

In the second game, the Sabers sent 13 batters up in a nine-run first inning in an 11-4 win to complete the sweep and propel past the Seariders for second place in the division. The Sabers (9-3) and West champion Kapolei (10-2) earn first-round bye in the 12-team OIA tournament, which starts Monday.

"We needed these two games, definitely," Campbell coach David Perreira said. "It's gives us a bye in the first round, rest our arms and aches and pains, here and there."

Sharae Esprecion was the beneficiary of the the Sabers' comeback, pitching two scoreless innings of relief of starter Summer Palipti, who went five-plus innings, leaving the game trailing 5-0.

Esprecion started the second game and benefited from the Sabers' nine-run first. She pitched five innings, allowing two runs (one earned), four hits and a walk with one strikeout. Kayce Konohia and Palipti each pitched an inning.

The Seariders (8-4) entered the game in sole possession of second, needing just a split to secure the second seed. But their defense collapsed in the last two innings, accounting for six unearned runs.

"The Leilehua game was the same and these two," Wai'anae coach Lincoln Naiwi Jr. said. "It's one of those days."

The Seariders committed seven errors in an 11-10 loss to the Mules on Tuesday. Wai'anae also committed four of their five errors in the Sabers' nine-run first inning of the second game. All of the runs were unearned.

In the opener, Wai'anae Piilani Smith-Keopuhiwa had a no-hitter through five innings. But Taylor Rosa-Ramon led off the sixth with a single to short. After pinch-runner Taylor Ho'ohuli was caught stealing, Jessica Arata fouled out to third for the second out.

Esprecion reached on a single to third and took second on Palipti's single to left. But an error loaded the bases and Nicole Arata was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Another error allowed two more runs to score to pull Campbell to 5-3. Konohia's RBI single made it 5-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jessica Arata reached on a two-base error with one out and Esprecion was hit by a pitch. Arata was forced out at third on Palipti's grounder to short for the second out. Kawehi Kapana was hit by a pitch to load the bases to set up Nicole Arata's game-winning hit, a ground double down the left-field line to score the tying and winning runs.

Perhaps still stunned by the first-game loss, the Seariders committed an error to allow the Sabers' lead-off batter, Esprecion, to reach safely and set the stage for the nine-run first inning. Twice there were plays in which two errors were made. There were six errors in the inning.

Smith-Keopuhiwa lasted just two-thirds of an inning, but all nine runs she was charged with were unearned.

The OIA tournament begins Monday, while the top two seeds from each division - Kapolei and Campbell in the West, and Castle and Kailua in the East - draw first-round byes. There is an off day Wednesday with the semifinals set for Thursday and the championship for Friday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
