Punahou sweeps HHSAA Wrestling Championships

For the third straight year, the Punahou wrestling team left the rest of the competition feeling blue. At Saturday night's Chevron/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Wrestling State Championships at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena, the Buffanblu swept the team competition to capture their fifth consecutive boys' title and third straight girls' crown in dominating fashion.

Punahou, which had three individual champions, tallied 210 points to lead all boys' teams. Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up Kamehameha finished second with 172 points, Lahainaluna was third with 137, Pearl City fourth with 125.5 and Campbell fifth with 84.

The Buffanblu girls' racked up 149.5 points to second-place Lahainaluna's 117.5. Pearl City was third with 116 points, Kahuku fourth with 108.5 and Aiea fifth with 96.

"Every one of them is different and came with their own challenges," Buffanblu coach Matt Oney said of his program's numerous state titles. "I'm really proud of the kids and the way they rebounded from yesterday."

During Friday's first day of the tournament, Punahou suffered a loss when 217-pounder Evan Johnson broke his ankle in a match. Oney said the rest of his team rallied around the senior after the injury.

"Yesterday was hard, they lost one of their captains in Evan and they had a moment when they looked like they might fall apart, but they rallied big time behind each other, behind him and I think that made a big difference," said Oney, who noted Johnson's parents decided to keep him home Saturday. "He had a rough night (Friday) night, a lot of pain, and I know he would have wanted to be here, and his teammates would have wanted him here, but I'm really happy and proud of them - both boys and girls."

Punahou's Todd Murakawa repeated at 132 pounds with a 13-4 win over Iolani's Holden Takahashi while Bryan Peralta defeated Farrington's Chaeden Grace-Reyes, 10-6, in the 154-pound final and Zachary Hernandez captured the 191-pound crown with a first-period pin over Lahainaluna's James Heron.

In other boys' finals, Mid-Pacific Institute's Terao brothers both brought home individual state titles. David, a senior, won at 127 pounds with a 15-3 rout of Punahou's Bryant Fukushima, while younger brother Josh, a freshman, captured the 110-pound crown with a 13-6 win over Lahainaluna's Christian Carbajal.

"It feels awesome, it's just amazing," said Josh. "My brother and I, we wanted this badly, to be able to win together this year, so I feel accomplished."

David added: "I'm mostly happy for my brother, that he was able to win."

Kamehameha's Shayden Terukina and Jacob Luning-Hoshino have more medals to add to their respective trophy cases after each won their third state championship. Terukina pinned Punahou's Brett Will to win the 137-pound title while Luning-Hoshino shutout Castle's Sean Hew-Len, 10-0, to finish first at 142 pounds.

"This feeling never gets old, it feels just as good everytime," said Luning-Hoshino. "I'm always on right after him, so I feed off of his success."

Meanwhile, a pair of Maui boys will be bringing home state titles to the Valley Isle. Lahainaluna's Chanse Uyeda stopped Iolani's Ian Akamine from attaining his third straight state title with a 9-4 win in the 147-pound final and Jonathan Pico of King Kekaulike narrowly edged Punahou's Laurent Remillard, 13-11, in overtime.

"I just trained a lot harder and came out ready this time," said Uyeda, who lost to Akamine, 8-3, in the finals of the Maui Invitational Tournament. "It's going to feel amazing to bring this title back home."

Pico is just the third individual titlist from King Kekaulike in state-tournament history.
"It feels really good, I'm excited to go back already," Pico said.

Meanwhile the Punahou girls' were led by sisters Chrissy and Mindy Chow, who won at 127 and 132 pounds, respectively.

Chrissy, a senior, won her third state title with an 8-3 win over Konawaena's Tanalei Louis while Mindy, a junior, won her second crown with a 15-0 technical fall over Rustee Johansen, of Kamehameha-Hawaii.

"It feels nice, I think we feed off of each other and it's nice that we were both able to get the job done tonight," Chrissy said.

In other girls' matches, Pacific Buddhist Academy's Quinn Nagatani upended rival Nicole Taniguchi of Punahou, 6-3, in the 110-pound girls' final to win the Dragons' first individual wrestling state title.

"I've been taking second for so long, this feels really good," said Nagatani, who lost to Taniguchi in last week's ILH final. "I don't think it's really hit me yet ... maybe it will in the morning."

Campbell's Rachel-Jean Factora won the 142-pound title by pin over Pearl City's Charmagne Monis at the 5:35 mark, despite battling numerous injuries throughout the season.

"It was tough mentally this season, I had a lot of obstacles I had to go through, but everything made me stronger," said Factora, whose first tournament of the season was last week's OIA individual championships. "I had a lot of support from my family and my team, my coaches and even my competitors, so I was lucky to have all that."

A pair of Aiea teammates had reason to celebrate together following their individual crowns. Samantha Higa battled through an elbow injury this week to win at 116 pounds and Darcie Manning-O'Brien capped off her 17th birthday with a 177-pound title.

"This is the best present I could ever get," said Manning-O'Brien, who drew inspiration from Higa's 4-0 win over Kahuku's Kristy Rabaino. "It was really great watching Sammy win, it gave me courage."

Higa, who was unable to finish last week's O'ahu Interscholastic Association final against Rabaino, scored a big upset in a semifinal win over Kamehameha's Bree Rapoza, who won a state title at 108 as a freshman last year.

"Just knowing that I could be a state champion got me through today and the pain my elbow was giving me," Higa said, who did not practice at all this week. "It was killing me, but I knew that I could fight through it."
