Pearl City, Kahuku win OIA wrestling titles

WAHIAWA -- The Pearl City boys won their first Oahu Interscholastic Association wrestling championship while the Kahuku girls won their second straight title at Leilehua's Paul T. Kobayashi Gymnasium Saturday night.

The Chargers accumulated 223 points while defending champion Campbell was second with 198 points. Kahuku had 137 points to place third, while Mililani was fourth with 129.5 and Farrington fifth with 95.

"It feels good to finally get that first title," Pearl City coach Mike Lee said. "We've been working at it for a while now - nine years we've been after this, so it feels very good. We knew we were up-and-up with Campbell and head-to-head matches (against the Sabers), we'd have to come up big."

Pearl City had three individual champions, led by 171-pounder Raynald Cooper III, who beat Radford's Kevin Corbett, 7-6, in the final.

"I had to go back to my basics and stay focused to finish," said Cooper, who also beat Corbett for the Western Division title last month. "I had a lot of confidence in my team and I'm proud of all of them. We've practiced our (butts) off, everybody did their part and we came out on top."

Jonathan Kamaka III also won at 114 pounds and Devin Ching captured first at 285 pounds for the Chargers, who also got runner-up finishes from 108-pounder Tristan Kamaka and 215-pounder Evan Greenleaf.

"This is the first time ever that Pearl City has won an OIA wrestling championship, so it feels good to be able to bring this back to our school," said Cooper, the defending state champion at 160 pounds.

Meanwhile, the Kahuku girls had to stave off a late push by Pearl City to win their seventh league crown and fourth in the past five years. The Red Raiders, with just two individual titlists, racked up 140.5 points to the Chargers' 137. Aiea was third with 103.5, Mililani fourth with 94 and Campbell fifth with 91.

"This was our goal, but we are still young and all we're looking to do is get better and try to close the gap," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. "Our girls have been improving throughout the season, but we also had some luck on our side today."

Anela Santiago had no problems defending her title at 155 pounds. The senior won by technical fall (15-0) over Nanakuli's Joslynn Kahala-Minczer in the final and 114-pounder Kristy Rabaino won her final by default over Aiea's Samantha Higa.

Kahuku also got runner-up finishes from Joreece Peapealalo at 175 pounds and Libby Petrie at 220. Torres noted the significance of Petrie's final against Pearl City's Sanoe Spencer.

"It was a good thing that (Santiago) won by that big margin, because it almost came down to that 220 match," Torres said. "(Petrie) lost the match, but she didn't give up the pin, which would have given (Pearl City) more points."

In other matches, the girls' 103-pound final between Mililani's Lauren Dias and Moanalua's Kayla Gayer proved to be one of the most entertaining of the day.

The pair were tied at two following a tightly-contested first period. Gayer, the Eastern Division champion, began the second period from the bottom position. Midway through the round, Dias picked up three near-fall points, but Gayer stormed back, scoring the next seven points to close out the period with a 9-5 lead.

"I wanted it so bad, because I hate to lose, so I just tried my hardest and I guess it was enough," said Dias, who beat Gayer in their only other meeting this year, a mini-tournament at Radford.

The wrestlers began the final period from the neutral position. Gayer extended her lead with a takedown 15 seconds in, but Dias reeled off the next eight points on a reversal followed by two, 3-point near falls to go ahead 13-11. However, she was penalized a point for choking and another point for fleeing the mat to tie it at 13 and send it into a fourth period.

"I really thought I was going to lose (at the end of regulation)," said Dias, who acknowledged the fleeing penalty. "I didn't want her to get that escape, but she got the point anyway and I just looked my corner and my coach was doing some very inspirational yelling, so I just got my head straight and pulled it together."

Dias, the Western Division titlist, regained the lead 25 seconds into the overtime period on a takedown and finished it with a pin at the 0:39 mark.

"I told her pretty much to keep her head up and keep going for it," Trojans' coach John Robinson said. "I was happy for her that she was able to come out on top."

Robinson had even more reason to be happy following the boys' 130-pound final, where Mililani's Robert Kim topped Derek Lee Loy of Moanalua, 8-5, to win his first OIA title.

"As a sophomore, Bobby's been a real leader for the team. He's really been working hard and he has the determination to go ahead and be a state champ if he keep it going," Robinson said. "The kids have worked really hard this week and throughout the season. We told them that this is what we've been working toward all year, to peak at OIA's and then to take it on to the state tournament."

Kim was ahead 2-0 after a first-period takedown, but Lee Loy got an escape and takedown in the final eight seconds of the second period to tie it at four to start the third period. Kim, who began in the bottom position, got a reversal with 1:35 left, but allowed Lee Loy to escape to hold a 6-5 lead, before securing the victory with a late takedown.

"It was a lot of back-and-forth action, but I wanted to stay aggressive and rack up some points. I was trying to go for the pin, but I just tried to keep going hard," said Kim, who was just getting over a cold. "It was kind of hard because of that, but winning makes me feel a lot better, too."

The top six boys and seven girls from the OIA tournament earned berths into next week's Chevron/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Wrestling State Championships at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.
