KAHUKU - Quarterback Evan Moe passed for three touchdowns and 169 yards in just 10 attempts to lead Kahuku over Waianae, 27-7, Saturday night in non-league high school football at Carleton Weimer Field.

A surprisingly sparse crowd - Kahuku's bleachers were only about two-thirds filled - watched the Red Raiders (1-0) amass 233 yards passing to 182 rushing in turning away the visiting Seariders (0-1), who were without about 10 players, mostly starters, because of eligibility issues.

"That's no excuse," Waianae coach Dan Matsumoto said. "Kahuku played a solid game tonight."

Moe was 6 of 10, tossing TDs of 67 and 33 yards to Punga Vea and 40 yards to Shairone Thompson. Backup Viliami Livai was 2 of 3 for 64 yards. Vea had four receptions totaling 167 yards.

"Their passing game was mean," Matsumoto said. "Great receivers, great hands. They're for real. It's nice to see them throwing the ball like that. Now, they can do anything they want. They have a passing attack, so they're going to be a real tough team to play."

"The whole offseason, we were working on our passing," Moe said. "Our O-line worked on their pass-blocking, so we were ready for this season."

Kahuku's multi-talented strong safety Tigi Hill did not need to take snaps in the game. With the short preparation - this game was scheduled on Tuesday after both teams were without opponents because of cancelations from previously scheduled opponents - Kahuku coach Reggie Torres decided to just let Hill play defense. But he said Hill will get shots at QB to give the Red Raiders another dimension.

"Not too many people have seen him at quarterback," Torres said. "He's an athlete. We'll use him on offense, if not quarterback, receiver."

Torres said the staff will make evaluations this week to see if Hill will be needed at QB. The Red Raiders open Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play next week against Kailua.

Hill is one of the more highly-touted recruits with offers from Oregon State, Washington, Utah, Utah State and Hawaii. His athleticism means he will be doing multiple duties this season.

"It's tiring, but I know it will pay off at the end, so I just want to help this team with a championship," said the 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior.

Kahuku jumped out in front the usual way - with the run - on running back Tyrone Brown's 47-yard run through the heart of the Waianae defense to take a 7-0 lead with four minutes, three seconds left in the first quarter.

The Red Raiders scored again with 1:55 left in the half Vea's 65-yard TD reception.

When Waianae received the ensuing kickoff wtth 1:48 left, Kahuku used its three timeouts and got the Seariders to punt from their 10. The Red Raiders took over at Waianae's 35 with 1:11 left and after an illegal procedure penalty on first down, Moe hit Thompson on a 40-yard TD to make it 20-0 with one minute left in the half.

The Seariders, though, rolled down the field on their next series, scoring their only TD of the game on an 11-yard TD pass from Puletua Wilson to Bryson Panui with 11 seconds left in the half to pull to 20-7.

Kahuku, though, scored on its first series of the second half on Moe's 33-yard TD pass to Vea to make it 27-7.

By mutual agreement earlier in the week, the teams cleared their benches in the fourth quarter.
