Kaimuki, Kamehameha-Hawai'i set to battle

Clint Onigama is hoping for a tour of the Hawaiian Islands in the coming weeks. If the second-year Kaimuki head coach has his way, his Bulldogs will make stops on the Big Island and Maui before finishing their season at Aloha Stadium, playing for a state title, on Nov. 26.

The Kaimuki football team, which won its second O'ahu Interscholastic Association White (Division II) title in four years with a resounding 48-12 win over Kalaheo, opens the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II State Tournament in Kea'au Friday at Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Kamehameha-Hawai'i.

The game between the Bulldogs and Warriors is one of two first-round pairings Friday. Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Kaua'i hosts OIA runner-up Kalaheo at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu'e in the other match-up. No. 1 seed and three-time defending state champ 'Iolani has drawn a first-round bye, along with Maui Interscholastic League titlist Lahainaluna. The winner of the Kaimuki-Kamehameha-Hawai'i plays the Lunas at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku next week, while the Raiders will host the winner of the Kaua'i-Kalaheo pairing.

"We don't know a whole lot about them, but we got some video on one of their games from the regular season," Onigama said of the Big Island Warriors. "They're a big team, they got some nice looking kids. They're physical and they look good, so we'll have our work cut out for us."

The Bulldogs (10-1) rely heavily on running back Chester Sua, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior who has given a verbal commitment to Washington State. In Friday's OIA White title game, Sua scored on touchdown runs of 1, 6 and 71 yards. He finished with 161 rushing yards on 17 carries, despite resting the entire fourth quarter.

"We had a few bumps and bruises from the game, but at least we (had) a nice long weekend to recover, so hopefully we'll be all right," said Onigama, whose team has reeled off 10 consecutive victories after a season-opening, non-league loss at Mililani.

Kaimuki's 48 points against Kalaheo was the second most it scored all season. The Bulldogs average just over 26 points and 305 yards of total offense per game while holding opponents to an average of 11.8 points per game.

"I think we will make some adjustments based on what we see (Kamehameha-Hawai'i) run, but for the most part, we're only going to really have three days of practice for this game, so a lot of it is we're just going to try and focus on what we have and make sure that we played disciplined football," Onigama said.

The Warriors (11-1) are on a roll, having won their last 11 games after falling to Kaua'i (27-15) in their season opener. Head coach David Baldwin's team is allowing just 8.3 points each game, while averaging 34.3 offensive points.

"For me, as a coach, all I want is sustained drives," Baldwin said. "How, why and what we do, almost depends on what we see and what we think we can do and even kind of how our practices go, too, that week. It's kind of like a food recipe ... what ingredients will make the best dish?"

Despite the impressive statistics, Baldwin believes his team has yet to play its best game.

"I've been talking to the media up on the Big Island for the last 11 games and each and every time I've felt like I'm still searching for that game," he said. "So hopefully we can peak as we enter the (state tournament) with a good of practices, but we haven't had that one game yet."

Senior Keoni Thompson is the quarterback at the controls of the Warrior offense. His favorite targets are receivers Tavon Pegues and Aukai Akau, who also lines up at running back. Colby Cabatu is a two-way player at running back and defensive end while CJ Ho'ohuli protects Thompson's blind side as the left tackle. Middle linebacker Taylor Cruz leads a stout defense.

Baldwin says he doesn't know a whole lot about the Bulldogs, but expects a battle come Friday.

"I know they're tough, I know they're talented and I know they're going to bring one hell of a game to our campus," he said.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Warriors' Paiea Stadium.
