MAKIKI — Pearl City weathered the elements and got defensive to come away with a 18-7 win over Roosevelt in a OIA Division II contest at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium Friday.

The Chargers (3-0 overall, 2-0 OIA) turned to its defense that held the Rough Riders (2-1 overall, 1-1 OIA) to 92 yards of total offense.

Joseph Pomele wrecked the game as he recovered a fumble and posted three of the defense's eight sacks. Jacob Calderon had two sacks and a forced fumble late in the fourth.

"To be honest, I didn't do anything special. Coaches give the play. I execute the play, just did my job. Opportunity came my way and I took it," Pomele said. "The defense is hyped right now. This game prepared us for the future coming games."

"We had a sloppy game. All credit goes to the defense. Without them, we wouldn't have came here with the win. We're happy to get the win and to keep this momentum going. 3-0, it's good to start off strong," Quarterback Trey Dacoscos said.

Pearl City scored on a safety with 1:02 to go in the first after a holding penalty in the end zone.

"The defense played real well. They gave some good opportunities for the offense. The offense struggled a little bit, but it's a team game," Pearl City coach Robin Kami said.

Dacoscos extended the play and found Derek Kusano for 44 yards to the Roosevelt 7. The Chargers extended their lead to 9-0 on Shaedyn Quemado's 3-yard touchdown run.

"We took what they gave us," Kami said.

Dacoscos bought time out of the pocket and hit Kusano, who raced for a 40-yard touchdown to put the Chargers up, 9-0. Kusano led all receivers with four catches for 94 yards.

"I was just extending the play. For him to go down field and making a play after that after catching the ball, all credit goes to him. We had a sloppy game offensively, so each touchdown really mattered to us," Dacoscos said.

Dacoscos threw for 210 yards on 14-of-35 passing and was picked off once.

"We had a slow start offensively. We picked it up halftime. This isn't a typical game for us. We're usually air raiding the ball downfield but all credit goes to the defense. Without them we wouldn't have won this game," Dacoscos said.

The Rough Riders scored their only points of the game on Dayten Tilton's 1-yard touchdown run.

In the fourth quarter, Bobby Sousa blocked Kahai Chang's 33-yard field goal attempt. Pomele recovered a fumble and redeemed the turnover on Chang's 31-yard field goal.

Ioane Kamanao finished 7-of-16 passing for 36 yards. He broke multiple tackles on a scamper down to the Pearl City 1. The Chargers bent but didn't break and Liam Castro Perry recovered Jacob Calderon's strip sack to snuff out the scoring threat.

"That goal line stand was big. That was good momentum for us. If they scored it would've been a one-score game, at least we had two scores up on them," Kami said.

Aaron Johnson had two tackle for losses and a sack to lead the Rough Riders' defense.

The Chargers begin their five-game home stand starting with McKinley (0-2 overall, 0-1 OIA) on Sept. 9.

Roosevelt hosts Nanakuli (0-2 overall, 0-1 OIA) in a non-league game on Sept. 2.
