WAIALUA — The home team picked up win No. 1 of the season Thursday night.

Spurred by a 21-yard pick 6 by Jack Amancio, Waialua took a 21-0 lead after three quarters, then held off visiting Kalaheo in a tight finish before a crowd of about 1,000 fans at Toshiyuki Nakasone Field.

After a season-opening 20-9 loss to Kalani a week ago, the Bulldogs (1-1) evened their record despite being out-gained by the Mustangs (0-1), 150 total yards to 131.

After a scoreless first quarter, Waialua got on the board one play into the second stanza. Amancio, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound senior defensive back, made a one-handed snag of a tipped Kalaheo pass near the left sideline and navigated his way into the end zone.

The Bulldogs' defense came through with another takeaway just three plays later. Kaleb Rice picked off Jude Weber pass on third down and returned it 13 yards to the Mustangs' 43-yard line. Four plays later — on fourth-and-7 — quarterback Emery Abilla hit Jayvie Arellano with a perfectly-placed pass in the right seam. Arellano hauled in the pass from Abilla and sliced his way between a pair of defensive backs for a 40-yard touchdown.

Waialua had a chance to pad its lead before the half, but was unable to cash in on third-and-goal from the 1. After a couple of penalties, the Bulldogs opted to try a field goal from 26 yards out, but Makoakai Fierro's kick sailed wide right and was no good.

Waialua held onto a 14-0 lead at the break, but stretched it to a three-score game after it capped its opening drive of the second half with a 5-yard TD run by Fierro. The touchdown was set-up by a 38-yard completion from Abilla to Germaine Bagasol on the first play of the drive.

Kalaheo recycled a turnover into its first score of the game. Four plays after defensive lineman Sean Ucciardi recovered a Waialua fumble — as a result of a low snap on a punt that Fierro was unable to handle — Matthew Pyne punched it into the end zone from a yard out with 10:26 to play.

The Mustangs pulled to within a touchdown in the game's final minute on a 25-yard scoring strike from Weber to Benjamin White. Reilly Campbell tacked on the ensuing extra point, but his onside kick attempt that followed was recovered by Waialua's Kalani Oda at his own 35-yard line and the Bulldogs were able to run out the clock.

Weber completed 14 of his 33 passes for 95 yards and Marcus Sasaki ran for 42 yards on 11 carries in the loss.

Abilla, a sophomore quarterback, threw for 111 yards on 6-of-15 passing with two interceptions.

Waialua had just 10 first downs and was 3 of 13 on third downs, while Kalaheo finished with 12 first downs — four of them via penalty — and was 2 of 11 on third downs.

The Mustangs were 1 of 4 on fourth downs.

Waialua came away with six tackles for loss, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries defensively, while Kalaheo tallied five tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including three sacks, and four takeaways (two picks, two fumble recoveries).

The teams combined for 26 penalties for 186 yards, including 14 for 108 by the Bulldogs.

It was Kalaheo's debut under first-year coach Jaymason Lee.

The Mustangs went 1-8 overall (1-6 league) a year ago. They will take on McKinley on Aug. 26 at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Waialua will play Kaimuki at Farrington's Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field Thursday night.
