PEARL CITY — Trey Dacoscos and the Pearl City Chargers are already looking like they're in midseason form.

The senior quarterback threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns as Pearl City scored on its first three possessions and never looked back to top visiting Kauai, 42-12, in both teams' season opener Saturday night at Bino Neves Stadium.

"We knew we have to start the game off strong to keep momentum," said Dacoscos, who completed 24 of his 35 passes. "Once we start that foot on the pedal, there's no stopping us."

Dacoscos, who missed three games last season with a high ankle sprain, was sharp to start the game as he helped engineer a 13-play drive on the Chargers' opening series.

"This offseason I've really been working off the field, on the field, in the gym and at rehab and that really helped me," said Dacoscos.

The senior quarterback made a number of plays with his legs, but instead of taking off for rushing yards, he always kept his eyes downfield for an open target. This helped Pearl City (1-0) rack up over 400 yards of total offense in the game.

"The ability for me to scramble really opens up the offense because when I'm out there I'm like a maniac," said Dacoscos. "People are moving around the field and if someone gets open, I just toss it up to them."

On the Chargers' second possession, Dacoscos completed all of his four passes on the drive for 68 yards and a 25-yard TD pass to Tobias Vazquez to make it a 14-0 game.

The Red Raiders (0-1) answered with a touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff, but Pearl City was still red hot offensively with Dacoscos throwing another scoring pass to Vasquez, who was lined up as the lone receiver on the far sideline.

"Me and Tobias, we have a really solid connection," Dacoscos said of Vasquez. "He's a really solid receiver, a really good weapon."

Dacoscos' third TD pass of the night was a 5-yard strike to Keaton Tomas just before halftime that gave the Chargers a 28-6 lead at the break.

Lennon Elder, who led all pass catchers with six receptions for 67 yards, scored on a 20-yard pass from Dacoscos midway through the third quarter.

Backup quarterback Jonah Galanto tossed a 24-yard TD pass to Shaeden Talo later in the period and Kahai Chang tacked on the PAT for Pearl City's final points of the night.

Defensively, the Chargers' first team unit kept the Red Raiders off the board with four sacks and four pass breakups. Kauai's only scores came on a kickoff return and against Pearl City's backups in the fourth quarter.

Liam Castro-Perry, Jace Noda, Joseph Pomele and Isaiah Salazar all recorded sacks for Pearl City. Tiger Ader led the pass defense with two consecutive pass breakups to end a first-half drive for the Red Raiders.

It was a tough opener for first-year Kauai coach Melila Purcell's squad, but Purcell acknowledged that it's a process.

"In order for us to taste that success, you have to go through phases," Purcell said.

"You have to take the bad with the good to be successful. This right here is a great learning took for these kids. Sometimes you have to lose in order to win. Hopefully it'll open up some eyes for these guys and go back to the drawing board and just get better."

Purcell, who played collegiately for the University of Hawaii and spent time in the NFL, added that he was proud of his team's effort.

"Even though they saw that scoreboard, they were still trying to work hard."

Recen Pegeder shouldered most of the load offensively with 12 passing attempts and 11 carries. He completed just three passes for 52 yards and a 36-yard TD pass to Kyzen Bisarra, but he did have seven positive carries for 39 yards.
