Kamehameha baseball • #21 INF Senior
It's not difficult for Kamehameha baseball coach Daryl Kitagawa to put into words what Elijah Ickes means to his team.
"He's the heart and soul," Kitagawa said of Ickes, a senior shortstop, leadoff batter and three-year starter for the Warriors. "He's been the heart and soul and backbone of our team and everything coming his way is well-deserved. He's such a great kid."
Kitagawa added that Ickes, along with fellow senior and three-year starter Ayden Lobetos, played instrumental leadership roles for the team this spring, which culminated with it capturing the program's first state title since 2003 at last week's Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I State Championships.
"We had some freshmen in Aukai (Kea) and Blade (Paragas) come up (to varsity) at the same time, but those two guys, Elijah and Ayden, being a year older, they're unquestionably the heart and soul and leaders of our team," Kitagawa said.
Ickes led by example, to be sure. The 6-foot, 180-pound University of Hawaii-commit isn't one to draw much attention to himself – unless its with his play on the diamond.
"He's a quiet leader. He's not a ‘rah-rah' guy and for me, I like that; I'm not a ‘rah-rah' guy," Kitagawa said. "Obviously he plays hard, but he really put his nose in the dirt this year and just worked his tail off in the offseason and in my opinion, he should be the state player of the year."
The numbers certainly give Ickes a solid case. He led all of Division I in hits (34), runs scored (25) and stolen bases (21) and was second in batting average (.500).
"Offensively he had a phenomenal year. He averaged almost two hits a game, which is ridiculous. Hitting is so hard; people don't understand it takes so much skill so the numbers don't really tell the whole story of how spectacular his season was. I mean, to me, he's a five-tool guy. He can run, he can hit, he can field, he can hit for power and his defense improved tremendously," Kitagawa said.
Kitagawa noted that Ickes shortened his swing this season, which led to a lot of singles. But, as he pointed out, with the speed that Ickes possesses, it was fairly typical of him to end up on second base not long after getting aboard.
"For him a single is like a double. I mean, he stole twenty-one bases this year. We always knew he could run, but he has an uncanny ability to time pitchers, get good jumps and just not be afraid. Like we tell him, ‘You get thrown out, so what?,' but I don't know if he got thrown out at all this year, to be honest," Kitagawa said. "Through it all though, he was that quiet leader and just led by example. He was never outspoken, but everybody knew what he brought to the team, so everybody kind of followed his lead as well."
The Warriors followed Ickes's lead at states last week, where he batted a combined 5 for 7 with three walks and three runs scored in three wins. He also drove in a pair of runs and scored the game-winning run in Friday's 5-4 victory over Baldwin in the championship game.
Ickes doubled in his first at-bat against the Bears and then brought home his team's first run of the game in his next AB with an RBI-sacrifice fly. It was Kamehameha's first of three runs in the bottom of the third and answered Baldwin's three runs that it scored in the top half of the frame.
"That was huge for us because throughout the year and over the years, our teams in general have struggled a lot in those situations – runners on second and third, or full base and no outs where we don't even score – so for him to do his job at that time was huge because even if we just scored one or two (runs), at least we answered Baldwin's three-run top of the third. Baldwin kind of punched us in the face, but we came back with that three-running inning and punched them right back. Plus, we're a great front-running team, we play great when we're ahead, but we've struggled when we're down, so to answer like that in such a big game with Elijah leading the way and not trying to do too much was big; He understood what he needed to do and he executed in that situation," Kitagawa said.
Ickes helped the Warriors take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. He led off with a single, stole second, then scored on Aukai Kea's two-out single back up the middle.
"Elijah got on base and I think on that very next pitch he stole the bag," Kitagawa recalled. "He just went right away and it was not even close and then for Aukai to come up in that situation was huge. I think it was Aukai's only hit in the state tournament, but what an opportune time to do it."
In his final at-bat, Ickes ignited Kamehameha's late-game heroics with his one-out single in the bottom of the seventh. The very next batter, Jace Souza, laced a triple to the gap that allowed Ickes to score the winning run all the way from first and gave the Warriors their fifth state championship in walk-off fashion.
Although it isn't reflected in the box score, Kitagawa is sure that the presence of Ickes on base impacted the end-of-game scenario.
"Baldwin knowing what kind of runner he is threw over four times, which I'm certainly caused that pitch to be elevated to Jace. I hate to say a lack of concentration, but if you're worried about Elijah that much – and I have the utmost respect for Baldwin and coach Craig (Okita), but Elijah's presence on first was a factor, for sure. I have no doubt about that and then when Jace hit that ball, there was no stopping Elijah. As soon as that ball was hit, he ran two-hundred-seventy feet as fast as I've ever seen anybody run. Our dugout came out there and they only had to run fifty feet, but he beat them all. It was amazing, what an incredible feeling. I'm so happy for Elijah and our team," Kitagawa said.
Ickes was one of six Warriors named to the All-Tournament Team, including Souza, who earned Most Outstanding Player honors.
"What a phenomenal year for a great kid. He comes from a great family and he's got a great support system with his siblings, his parents and his grandparents – I just couldn't be happier for him. UH is getting a good one, that's for sure," Kitagawa said.
Kitagawa said that Ickes has drawn lots of interest from professional scouts ahead of next month's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

PAC-5 softball • #5 P/INF Sophomore
One can describe Elyse Yoshioka's presence in the pitching circle as unflappable.
The sophomore's steady play for the PAC-5 softball team in last week's DataHouse/HHSAA Division II State Championships proved just that.
Yoshioka, a 5-foot-2 right-handed pitcher, threw every pitch of all three games for the Wolfpack en route to their sixth state title in program history and first since 2016. Yoshioka logged three complete games in as many days – all of them one-run wins for her team – capped off by a thrilling 13-12 victory over top-seeded Waimea in Friday night's championship game.
"What impressed me the most is her attitude," PAC-5 coach Blake Lau said of Yoshioka, who completed the season with a win-loss record of 13-2 and an earned run average of 3.64.
"That kid is very calm, very collected, she never gets upset. I don't see her get upset. Some people strike out and they throw the bat, (but) she doesn't do that. She's always in check, whether it's on the field pitching, or the defensive side. This girl is one of a kind. She's always very positive, smiling – nothing bad, ever. She doesn't' swear, she don't get upset – that's unreal for a child at that age – and that's the good thing about her," Lau said. "She's easy to talk to and she's my go-to girl for the next two years. She's the leader in her own way. She's not very vocal, she's quiet and effective; that's what she is. She don't talk too much, she just goes out there and produces."
The Wolfpack were seeded third in the 12-team state tournament behind KIF-champion Waimea and OIA-champion and No. 2 seed Nanakuli. They had a bye in Tuesday's opening round before a quarterfinal matchup against defending state champion Kapaa on Wednesday.
PAC-5 withstood a furious late-inning rally by the Warriors to hang on for the 10-9 win. Yoshioka scattered 10 hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Two of the runs she was charged with were unearned, a result of three Wolfpack errors.
"During the season, because we're very limited, I would tell her to just go at the batters," Lau explained. "We'll take whatever they give us. They hit the ball, we make an error on defense, we just gotta shake it and move on to the next batter. Defense was the weakest part of our team and she understood that and she wouldn't get upset. She doesn't frown on it, she understands and just works with it and she's very supportive of everybody, which was really good and a plus for us. She would never give up on it, she always kept us in the game. She really did a hell of a job."
The following night, in a 12-11 win over Nanakuli – then the No. 10 team in the ScoringLive Power Rankings – Yoshioka struck out 11 batters, walked nine and allowed 10 earned runs on eight hits. The Wolfpack rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off against the Golden Hawks.
"She really gutted it out, it's unbelievable. She just stayed in there and just grinded it out. We take the lead, we give it back and she just fought through it without breaking down, without getting upset," Lau said. "She just stayed in there and fought right through it. That kid is unbelievable. Nothing fazes her. They hit her, but she came back fighting. She fought all through the whole tournament."
Yoshioka threw 167 pitches against Nanakuli, 95 of them for strikes. But she topped that number a night later with a 193-pitch effort against Waimea in the state championship game. Yoshioka recorded 107 strikes on the night and faced 42 batters. She registered 10 strikeouts against nine walks and allowed 10 earned runs on nine hits. Furthermore, Yoshioka overcame seven errors – although three of them were charged to her.
"Her most important thing is her demeanor is very calm. She doesn't get rattled, she doesn't show that she's pressured or anything, that's the good thing about her. You can talk to her and she doesn't get excited. We stress to her ‘one pitch at a time, one out at a time,' she really fit into that and I couldn't do too much advanced things because we don't have the defense to do it, so we just played plain, simple softball one pitch at a time and that really helped us out, but she has a lot of tools and she'll go far, that girl. She's very good at pitching and she's very consistent," Lau described.
Yoshioka also proved her worth with a bat in her hands. In the three state tournament games, she hit .500 (5 for 10), including a 4-for-5 effort in the title game. The left-hand-hitting Yoshioka also tripled and scored twice against the Menehunes. For the season, Yoshioka finished with a .458 batting average. She tallied 27 hits, including 11 doubles, in 59 at-bats with 22 runs batted in and 18 runs scored. Yoshioka has also drawn eight walks on the year.
Yoshioka spent most of the season batting fifth in the lineup, but Lau moved her up to the two-hole for the state tournament.
"She always puts the ball in play, that's the big plus for us. She hardly strikes out and she really worked to eliminate a lot of those pop-ups and that really helped us. She really fits in both the fifth hole or the second hole; she was raelly strong for us and she a lot of RBIs and a lot of clutch hits for us in the regular season and the playoffs," Lau said.
Yoshioka's 11 doubles were the most by any player statewide. Her pitching accolades were just as impressive. She was tied for the most wins (13) in all of D2 and ranked second in innings pitched (86 2/3). Yoshioka was first in strikeouts (108) and fourth in ERA (3.64).
Friday's state final came down to pitching. After Milan Ah Yat belted the go-ahead grand slam in a pulsating top of the seventh inning, Yoshioka closed it out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame. She got clean-up batter Kaelyn Banquel to strike out swinging for the first out, then retired Kayla Prigge on a fly out to left field before setting down Nia Pablo with a four-pitch strikeout to end the game.
"Everyone doubted us that we wouldn't even have a team and they never thought that we would come this far. Like I told the girls at the start of the season, we gotta trust in each other, we gotta be honest with everybody and it's going to be a lot of ups and downs, but we gotta fight through everything, take it one out at a time, one inning at a time, one base at a time, one game at a time and that's what they did. Every one of them contributed and whether it was on the field or off the field, we just hung together as a team. They didn't' panic as a team and with Elyse up there, she don't get excited, she don't panic and that really helped the team because she doesn't show anxiety and everybody is calm and collected, so they kind of took on her persona," Lau said.
Yoshioka was one of five PAC-5 players selected to the All-Tournament Team, including Ah Yat, who was tabbed as Most Outstanding Player.
