Saint Louis boys and Punahou girls win state track titles

Saint Louis was the surprise winner of the boys team championship and Punahou was the repeat winner of the girls team championship at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Island Movers Track and Field Championships.

The competition started on Friday and concluded on Saturday evening at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Maui.

The Crusaders scored 64 points to edge perennial power Punahou by two points. Mililani was third with 57 points, and Moanalua fourth with 46.

It was Saint Louis' second track and field state championship; the first came in 2009. Just a week earlier, Punahou beat Saint Louis by 20 points to win the ILH team championship.

The Crusaders won two events at the state meet – Michael Joshua Price won the 800, and the foursome of Sytyn Lasconia, William Reed, Kanoa Monteilh and Trech Kekahuna won the 4x100 relay. The Crusaders also got runner-up showings in the 100 (Trech Kekahuna), the 4x400 relay, and the high jump (William Reed).

There were four two-event winners in the boys competition:

• Hawaii Baptist Academy senior Shane Kawakami-Williams won the 100 and 400 races. His winning time of 10.63 in the 100 would have tied the state meet record set by Damien's Christian Padron in 2017, but Saturday's finals were held in "wind-aided" conditions.

• Kamehameha senior Kealiikupono Dikilato won the discus and shot put. His winning discus mark of 161 feet, 2 inches, was more than 12 feet ahead of his closest competitors.

• Moanalua senior Joshua Sanders won the long jump and the 300 hurdles.

• Kalani junior Yuta Cole ruled the distance events, winning both the 1500 and 3000.

Also of note, Baldwin senior Joseph Randolph won the 200 in 21.35 seconds. That would have beat the previous record of 21.67 set by Punahou's Andrei Iosivas in 2018, but Saturday's final was run in wind-aided conditions.

In the girls division, it was Punahou's record 39th state championship, including the last four. The Buffanblu finished with 67 points, followed by Mililani (58), Kamehameha-Kapalama (55) and Iolani (44).

Punahou girls won two events, led by junior Nala Stojadinovic. She won the 300 hurdles, and was part of the victorious 4x400 relay team with Dalen Lau, Kylie Moniz and Xevani Salanoa.

The Buffanblu also got runner-up showings from Stojadinovic in the 100 hurdles, Lulu Uluave (shot put), and the 4x100 relay team.

Kamehameha-Kapalama senior Tatum Moku was the only three-event winner of the event, and she also scored a meet-best 40 points by herself. She won the 100 hurdles, pole vault and long jump. She also placed third in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 100.

There were two two-event winners in the girls division:

• King Kekaulike sophomore Ja'lyn Deichert won the 100 and 200 sprints. The 200 final was a literal photo finish, as officials had to review the results before announcing it. Deichert's winning time was 25.24, followed by Mililani's Deiona Carter at 25.25, and Iolani's Mia Shepard at 25.26.

• Mililani senior Zola O'Donnell dominated the distance events, winning both the 1500 and 3000. Her winning time of 10:29.79 in the 3000 was more than 34 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

One state record was broken in the girls division. Le Jardin sophomore Charli Kennedy cleared 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump. The previous record of 5-5.5 was set by Kahuku's Natasha Kai in 1999.
