Saltiban, Vikings fought for spot in states; Wong's hat trick helps Warriors to ILH title

Devin Saltiban

Hilo baseball  •   #5  OF/P  Senior

For Devin Saltiban there is no satisfaction in individual achievement.

The fourth-year starting centerfielder for the Hilo High baseball team has continued to put his team before himself and Saltiban and the Vikings are hoping the payoff will come at this week's Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I State Championships.

Hilo (13-2), the runner-up from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, will open against Moanalua, the fifth-place team from the Oahu Interscholastic Association, in one of four first-round games Tuesday at Les Murakami Stadium on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

But the Vikings weren't assured of a spot in the 12-team state tournament field until Saturday, only after they defeated OIA sixth-place finisher Kaiser, 11-3, in a play-in game at Dr. Francis Wong Stadium.

Saltiban, a 5-foot-11 senior and No. 3 batter in the card for Hilo, went 2 for 4 at the plate with a triple and an RBI. He also stole a base and scored twice and was one of three Vikings to pair hits, along with leadoff batter Mekenna Wakakuwa (2 for 4, double, three RBI, two runs) and Zion Palea (2 for 4, double, RBI).

Hilo coach Baba Lancaster said that Saltiban's performance in the win-or-stay-home game against the Cougars was indicative of his season as a whole.

"He's been pretty steady all year," Lancaster said. "Especially coming into this year, he'd been working a lot harder in the gym, in the (batting) cages), getting stronger, quicker and this year he's been really focused on winning the championship. It's too bad that we came up short in the BIIF, but we still got a chance in the states. He's been really focused this year much more than previous years."

The Vikings were edged by crosstown rival Waiakea for the BIIF D1 crown in a best-of-three series last week. In Hilo's game 1 victory last Monday, Saltiban batted 2 for 3 with a home run, double and two RBI in the 3-2 win over the Warriors. However, Hilo was unable to close out the series win over the next two days and instead was relegated to Saturday's play-in game against Kaiser.

Lancaster pointed out that although the Warriors were careful with their offerings at the plate to the dangerous Saltiban, the University of Hawaii-commit managed to keep from getting frustrated.

"Waiakea kinda played him smart. After we beat them the first night, they pitched around Devin and actually intentionally walked him maybe three, four times over the next two games. They really didn't pitch him anything good, but he stayed positive and did whatever he could to help the team," Lancaster said.

Despite the pair of one-run losses to the defending state champion Warriors, Saltiban was anything but salty in the aftermath.

"Even after we lost the championship game to Waiakea he didn't show his emotions after and he went to the Waiakea dugout, congratulated them, took pictures with them — that's just the kind of person he is," Lancaster said. "I wish I could have him for the next four years; He's just a great kid."

It's the same type of leadership that Saltiban has displayed all season as one of five seniors for the Vikings.

"Like I told him before the season started, ‘We're following you and you're gonna show us the way,' " Lancaster said. "That's been our motto from day one and he's been doing excellent things for our team and how far he takes us is how far we'll go. Of course, he's a helluva of a player, but he's also a good leader because he doesn't just think about himself, he thinks of the team and what will make the team better."

Saltiban was recognized as both a First Team All-BIIF and All-Hawaii outfielder as a junior last season, not that those accolades matter to him much.

"He doesn't worry about his own personal accomplishments, he's worried about the team more than he worries about himself. That's the type of leader he is, besides just being an all-around good kid," Lancaster said.

Lancaster said that although the five-tool Saltiban is signed with the University of Hawaii, he expects him to go in next month's MLB Draft. He likens him to former Hilo standout and current University of Tennessee shortstop Maui Ahuna, who is also expected to have his name called during the Draft.

"He does kind of remind me of Maui Ahuna. They play different positions, but their mindsets are pretty much the same. Maui too, he didn't worry about his own accolades and the team always came first, just like how Salti is," Lancaster said. "Whether he goes to college or the next level, whoever gets him next year is getting a gem. You cannot go wrong with that boy."

Saltiban's defense in centerfield is not to be overlooked either, Lancaster pointed out.

"You should have seen the plays he made this year. He made five or six diving plays, he threw out four or five runners at home — he's the catalyst in the outfielder for us. He's the leader out there and in my eyes, I think he had a hell of a season. Although we lost the BIIF, he should, hands down, be the player of the year in the BIIF," Lancaster said.

But for all his abilities on the diamond, Lancaster goes back to Saltiban's relatability to all of his teammates and opponents alike.

"He picks everybody up because I told him that, ‘If you're down, everybody will be down,' and this year he hasn't shown any sour attitude in any of our games, whether he grounds out or goes oh-for-three, he's always positive and that's what I looked at in his leadership this year and that's what I liked. He wouldn't show it if he was having a bad day and I just cannot stress enough just how much of an all-around good kid he is. He's very respectful to everybody and I'm pretty sure you can ask anybody on the Big Island about Devin Saltiban and they'll tell you he's just an an all-around good kid,"

Saltiban, who is the fifth of seven siblings, can also pitch if need be, and is — to no one's surprise — a team captain.

"When you see his family at the games, you can just see how much love that family has for each other, so it's no secret why Devin is the way he is and it's really been an honor and a pleasure to coach him," Lancaster added.

Saltiban and the Vikings, who are ranked seventh in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings, will play Moanalua at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Murakami Stadium. The winner will advance to face No. 4 seed Campbell at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the tournament quarterfinals.

In other first-round games Tuesday, Kailua will play No. 8 Kamehameha-Maui at 10 a.m., No. 5 Iolani meets Leilehua at 4 p.m. and Mililani will face No. 2 Saint Louis at 7 p.m.

Leinaala Wong

Kamehameha water polo  •   #9    Junior

Leina'ala Wong and the Kamehameha girls water polo team are in the midst of a banner season.

The Warriors toppled perennial powerhouse Punahou by a score of 7-4 in last week's Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship match and Wong, a junior attacker, scored a hat trick to lead the way. It is Kamehameha's first league crown since 2006.

"Probably at the end of the season I'll be able to look back and give a better take on that, but I mean, in some way it felt like just another game against (the Buffanblu) and obviously they're a really talented team and it takes all of us in the pool, on the bench, the whole coaching staff – it really was a team effort between all of us for it to come together the way it did last Tuesday," said Kamehameha coach Anthony Cabrera, whose team was awarded the top seed in next week's Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA State Championships when the bracket was revealed Monday.

The win for the Warriors brought an end to Punahou's 15-year reign atop the ILH. Wong's part in the victory included two power-play goals and a penalty shot, in addition to the defensive pressure she provided from her attacker position.

"I think she did a couple things really well. She was able to play really good defense on a couple of Punahou's better players and she really picked her spots well to score. She wasn't forcing the play to come to her, she was taking what was given and tracking at the right moment. Her teammates are the ones setting her up to do those kinds of things and because of how well the team was passing, we were able to open up some shooting lanes for her," Cabrera said.

It was the fifth meeting between the Warriors and Buffanblu this season. Kamehmeha's 5-2 win on March 4th was an eye-opening one, to be sure. The result was Punahou's first loss in 16 years, but the Warriors also took the next meeting on March 29th, 8-4. The Buffanblu exacted revenge with a 7-6 win over Kamehameha on Apr. 5th and a 5-4 victory on Apr. 20th. The final result led to last Tuesday's winner-take-all playoff for the ILH title, which took place before a packed house at Kamehameha's Kalaniopu'u Pool.

Cabrera said that the high energy from the crowd made for a fun atmosphere.

"It was good. I mean, I didn't look up in the stands, but it sounded like there was a good amount of Punahou and Kamehameha fans and they were loud and we definitely could hear the cheers going throughout the game. The other cool thing I remember is we went to the far side of the pool and we look up and saw the baseball team supporting us. It felt like an electric atmosphere, you could say. The coaches and players, when it's a big atmosphere and loud, I think they respond and we play our best games when we have a really big crowd. Both fan bases are really great with that so it makes it fun for us, for sure," Cabrera said.

Perhaps the large crowd gave Wong a bit of a boost to start each quarter.

"I think she won all four, or three of the four sprints that night, so she was able to use that speed to get us the first possession in three of the four quarters, which was pretty instrumental. One of the sprints, she was able to get the ball and pass it up to one of the other girls that was open and we got a goal off of that," Cabrera recalled.

Speed is a big part of Wong's skillset, as evidenced by her many accolades in the pool. She was an All-ILH Second Team attacker as a sophomore last season. During the winter season, Wong earned four state medals in swimming. She was second in the state in the 100-yard freestyle and third in the 50 free. Additionally, she was a member of both the state-champion 200-medley relay team and state runner-up 200 freestyle relay team.

"That has translated really well to water polo, but she puts in the work and really works on translating from the one sport to the other sport. One of her biggest strengths is her speed. She's able to use her speed to get open on the counterattacks, she's able to get open also driving to the cage. She has a strong shot and is able to deal with the defensive pressure really well and then she's an aggressive defender and is good in defending girls one on one," Cabrera said.

Earlier this season, in a 10-6 win over Iolani, Wong netted a season-high seven goals. She has scored 20 total goals on the year.

"I would say her role has become more prominent through the years, just with the more experience she's gained in the offseason and during the season. She's definitely one of our go-to scorers and when we need a goal we want her to get open, but she also does a lot of the things she does by moving and swimming and driving, which helps to open up her teammates as well, so she's not just one-dimensional. She'll drive to get other people open as well. We like to use her speed to fuel our counterattack and those kinds of things," Cabrera said.

Wong is one of five captains for the Warriors this spring. Cabrera describes her leadership style as more "by example.

"She working hard in certain sets, trying to maintain a fast pace, trying to stay focused during times when we need to be focused, so it's mostly by example," Cabrera said of Wong, a member of the student council. "She's a real happy-go-lucky kid. It's pretty rare to find ‘Ala without a smile on her face and it's fun to coach kids like that. She brings a smile to her teammates' faces too, so it makes it enjoyable for us as a coaching staff to work with players like that."

Cabrera is in his 11th season with the program and fifth as head coach. He previously served as coach of the Division II team and prior to that was an assistant with the D1 squad. He has relished the opportunity to coach this group of girls.

"I just want to commend the girls on their hard work," he said. "I mean, I'm not the one that has to get in the pool and put the game plan into action and they've done a really good job of coming together as a team and focusing their efforts for a common goal, so I'm super impressed with their effort and diligence not just during the season, but throughout the offseason as well. It's been a number of years in the making, for sure."

Wong and the Warriors (8-2) will have a first-round bye before they open state tournament play against either Roosevelt or Hawaii Prep on Thursday, May 11. The final three days of the tournament will take place at Kamehameha's Kalaniopuu Pool, with the championship set for Saturday, May 13 at 6 p.m.
