Hot-hitting Owan sets table for Mules; Waiki brings power to top of lineup for Sabers

Loren Owan's hard work is paying off for the Leilehua senior.

The shortstop has set the table for the Mules all season as their leadoff batter, but the 5-foot-8, 167-pound Owan has turned his production up a notch as of late. Owan helped his team close out the 12-game regular season with a pair of much-needed wins last week.

In a 5-2 win at Aiea last Tuesday, Owan batted 2 for 3 with a pair of home runs — his first two of the year. He was also hit by a pitch and crossed the plate three times on the afternoon to back a complete-game pitching performance by Koen Barton.

"That first one was like a line drive to right center. It wasn't a high-arching home run, (but) I think that's the kind of ball that he hits, just that solid line drive that keeps going," Leilehua coach Brandon Kon said.

Owan's first dinger tied the game at 1 in the top of the third. The Mules took the lead later in the same frame. Owan's second homer came in the top of the seventh and extended the Leilehua lead to 5-2.

"The second one was kind of the same, it landed in the tennis courts and it was late in the game as an insurance run to put us up three, so both home runs were huge for us. It was awesome to see," Kon added.

The win over Na Alii lifted the Mules to 4-1 during the second round of the double-round robin schedule, just a few weeks after they sat at 2-4 at the midpoint of the season. A chance at a second-place finish in the OIA Division I West was still at stake heading into Saturday's regular-season finale against first-place Campbell, the highest-ranked team out of the OIA in the ScoringLive Power Rankings at the 10 spot.

Despite so much at stake, Kon said that he and his players took the same approach as always.

"We battled, but every game is a battle for us — that's what we tell the kids, to expect a battle every single game," said Kon, whose team fell to the Sabers by a narrow 2-1 score the first time the teams met.

"It's always a close game, so we gotta do every little thing right, that's the mindset we take into every game and the Campbell game was the same thing. We knew we had to battle," he added.

Kon's squad flipped the script on the visiting Sabers to the tune of an 8-7 victory. The Mules tallied 12 hits as a team to overcome five errors and had to rally with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Leilehua's top four hitters in the card each paired hits, led by Owan, who went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and three runs scored. He was also hit by a pitch.

"He played well. I think we kind of put a team effort together against Campbell, we had a lot of guys with hits. We made some mistakes, but we had to keep battling. We knew that as long as we had outs, we gotta keep battling and (Owan), along with his teammates, did a great job of that and we kept fighting to the end and it worked out," Kon said.

The win over the Sabers ran Leilehua's record to 7-5, good enough to finish in a tie for second with Mililani. However, by virtue of a tiebreaker — essentially its win over Campbell — Leilehua claimed the No. 2 seed and the coveted bye into the quarterfinals of the OIA tournament that comes with it.

"We knew that going in and we kind of take the mindset that we just gotta focus on the game and win the game. We don't want to worry about, ‘We need this to happen or this to happen.' Whoever is the next game for us, that's our focus and we gotta win," Kon said. "The boys did a great job. It was a huge win, but every game is important to us. It's not like this one we can take off, or that one we can lose, we're trying to win every game, so we take that mindset and kind of let everything fall into place with record and seeding and all of that."

Leilehua turnaround as a team has somewhat paralleled Owen's at the top of the order. His batting average was a mere .214 (3 for 14) through his team's first six games. However, he went 10 for 19 (.526) over his next six games to bring up his batting average to .394. Owan leads the Mules in hits (13), runs scored (8) and home runs (2). His best day at the plate came in 7-1 win over Mililani, when he batted 4 for 4 in a night game that was televised live to statewide audience.

"I think it's just a more aggressive mindset. We're really trying to generate runs in any way we can, so I'm glad that he's getting more base hits now, of course. He sets the table for the middle of our order and he's a smart base runner and I'm glad to see the hits kind of going up, but any way to get on base is fine," Kon said.

Owan played in one game as a freshman back in the spring of 2020 before the COVID pandemic hit. He saw limited playing time as a sophomore the following year before he finally found his way into the starting lineup last season. Owan batted .385, with 15 hits, 12 RBI and eight runs scored on the year and picked up All-OIA West Second Team honors.

"He's worked hard throughout the years to improve," said Kon, who took over the program in 2022. "I think he's improved each year and he's put together a pretty solid season thus far and hopefully we have more games coming up, if we earn them. I've been happy with his progress throughout the season. He definitely puts in the time and it's showing. To me, he's earned the season that he's having and I'm happy to see it, for sure."

Kon added that it's Owan's work ethic all year round that has paid dividends for the Bethel University (Minn.)-bound ballplayer.

"He puts in a lot of time outside of practices with strength coaches, hitting coaches, so he definitely has the dedication to the game. He's not afraid of the big moments and I think that goes to the amount of preparation that he does and the amount of games that he's played in his life. Whether it's offensively or defensively, he's not afraid of the big moments. He likes the balls hit to him in big situations and he's not nervous in those big at-bats and I feel confident that he knows what to do in those big situations," Kon said.

One of those hard-to-measure areas that Owan has shown much growth, Kon says, is in his on-field communication.

"He's encouraging his teammates around him, trying not to let anybody get down, making sure that in tough times the guys don't get too down and stay positive and also celebrate when we do things well and that's something I've noticed this season that I've been pleased with is how he's communicating and talking to our pitcher as one of the leaders of our defense, so I think the communication skills that he's been showing have been nice to see," Kon expressed.

Owan and the Mules will host East third-seeded Moanalua in a quarterfinal-round game Tuesday afternoon. Moanalua posted a 4-1 win over West sixth seed Nanakuli in Monday's opening round of the OIA tournament.

The winners of Tuesday's quarterfinals will advance to Thursday's semifinal round at Les Murakami Stadium with the championship game taking place Friday night.

First pitch between the Mules and Na Menehune Tuesday is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Wahiawa Middle School field.

Quinn Waiki

Campbell softball  •   #16  SS  Junior

Longtime Campbell softball coach Shag Hermosura knew from the get-go that Quinn Waiki could play some ball. He was right.

Waiki, a junior shortstop for the top-ranked Sabers, has made quite the impression on Hermosura — and the rest of the OIA, for that matter — this spring season. She actually enrolled at Campbell late last year, after transferring from Hilo High, but she arrived after the official start date for the 2022 season and was not eligible to join the team until this year.

She was worth the wait.

Waiki leads the Sabers in batting average (.578), hits (26), runs batted in (20), runs scored (20), doubles (5), triples (1) and home runs (6). She has reached base in all 13 games, recorded at least one hit in all but one game and tallied nine multi-hit games.

"It's great," Hermosura stated of Waiki's contributions. "It's a plus for the program and it's a plus for herself, as well as the team, but I cannot say much more about the leadership and what she has done and what she's capable of doing."

Hermosura was unaware of Waiki's presence on campus last season until it was brought to his attention by some of his players.

"I was told that there's a girl that wants to come out and play and try out and she did this season," he said.

When he finally saw her on the diamond, he knew she would be able to contribute in one way or another.

"I thought that she had great potential and that she could be my leadoff or my second batter, but other than that we have other people that, I think, can play in those positions, but she worked hard at it and she got the job," Hermosura said.

Still, despite the potential that Waiki possessed, even Hermosura admits he is a bit surprised by her immediate success, especially given the fact that she bats leadoff and plays a prominent position defensively at shortstop.

"I never thought that she would be having the type of year that she is, but she's a fighter and she's a gamer and takes everything in stride," he said.

Waiki certainly took things in stride in the final game of the regular season, when she went 4 for 4 with two RBI and three runs scored in a 5-2 win over Mililani. Waiki was officially credited with three doubles and one home run, but television replays showed that her third double should have been in fact, another home run. Instead the home plate umpire ruled it a ground-rule double.

Waiki shrugged it off and took her base at second.

"Like I would tell her, ‘It is what it is.' We cannot change that, but she'll just move forward. She just takes everything in stride and things like that, we cannot control," Hermosura said. "We try to argue the point, but the umpire is not going to change their mind."

Waiki and the Sabers continued their hot ways throughout last week's OIA Division I tournament.

After a first-round bye, Campbell beat Kapolei, 4-0, in the tournament quarterfinals Thursday; Waiki went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBI. She homered and scored twice in Friday's 5-2 semifinal win over Mililani before Waiki closed out the week with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 7-0 win over No. 2 Waianae in the championship game.

It was the Sabers' first OIA title since 2019 and eighth overall.

"I believe that she really wanted to achieve and lead the team, as well as (pitcher) Taryn Irimata, to get to the next level and the whole team wanted it — the coaching staff, the team. It's a team-oriented game and we wall want it, but it's how much you want it," Hermosura said.

He noted that what Waiki does on the other side of the ball, from her shortstop position, should not be overlooked. Her secondary position, by the way, is behind the plate.

"She works hard defensively, because, like I tell the team, our best defense is defense and she puts 120 percent every day at practice, I can guarantee that. You watch her practice, you'd be amazed what she can do and what she wants to do and how much she wants it," Hermosura said.

Waiki has made the transition from the east side of the Big Island to the Ewa plain of Oahu seem like a seamless one and not just on the softball field. She went from a school with roughly 1,300 students at Hilo to one with the state's largest enrollment in Campbell, with more than 3,000 students.

"It's her herself," Hermosura said. "She's made the adjustments over here and at school and coming from a small place to a big place here, I think she's adjusted well. She has very good leadership and she's an independent person and just goes about her business, studies in school and at home and she's very disciplined."

It's not hard to see why Waiki's new teammates took to her as quickly as they did.

"She's very humble. Very, very humble," Hermosura added."She brings a lot of leadership. A lot of people see what she can do, the team sees what she can do and they try to follow her, her mental and physical attributes, but just her mental attitude, I think, is what makes her special."

Waiki still has her senior year ahead of her, but Hermosura said that she is starting to receive looks from colleges, including San Diego State. For now, she is keeping her options open.

For now, Waiki's focus is on to the state tournament, which runs May 2-5 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Waiki and the Sabers (13-0) will have a first-round bye as one of four league champions in the 12-team field.

"She has a good eye hand coordination, that's what I really like about her, her eye hand coordination is really good. Other than that academically she's very good, physically she's in the best shape, she knows it's a different way that we coach to get them in shape, I always tell Quinn if you cannot do it at home or in school then I cannot use it on the field and she understands that."

"There's always room for imporvment and I think she's going to keep getting better and better and better."

"Not that I know of. Not sure. Apparently, SDSU is looking at her, she's keeping her options open I think."

"Coaches at practice we can scream and yell but it's all up to the girls themselves who are playing how much they want it, so at this point it's participating in the sport and having fun."
