Nevaeh Telles was perfect from the plate and her four home runs powered No. 4 Kamehameha-Kapalama over No. 6 Maryknoll, 19-18, in a wild, high-scoring affair on their own field in Saturday.

Since starting the season 3-3, the Warriors won seven of their last eight games to improve to 10-4 and stays alive in the ILH Division I double-elimination tournament.

"When we first started the season, we did not start strong. We also said we don't want to peak too early and we don't want to peak too late. I feel like peaking right now in the ILH tournament this is the perfect time to lock it down, to get our hitting on, to get our defense on and to be there for each other. I'm proud of how they played today, to push through, and to come out with a victory," Telles said.

The Spartans won four of their next five games prior to the contest but dropped to 8-7 on the season.

Maryknoll faces Iolani on Tuesday, Apr. 18 after the Raiders eliminated Punahou, 8-7 today. Winner of Iolani/Maryknoll advances to face Kamehameha on Thursday, Apr. 20.

Telles went 5-for-5 with eight RBI from the plate and before today, had one home run in their win against Punahou on Apr. 12. The senior second baseman had four home runs, a single, and scored five runs to give the Warriors a much-needed spark.

"That's the most I've ever hit in one game. I've been making big adjustments in the cage. So I've been focusing on barreling the ball. In prior games, I've been trying to do too much where I'm trying to hit home runs, instead of letting the ball come to my barrel and drive it," Telles said.

Telles hit a home run to right field to bring Kamehameha within two, 18-16 in the bottom of the sixth. Marley Espiau was hit by a pitch and Kainani Jacang went to second and then third on Kezia Lucas' fielder's choice. Jacang scored off of Miquela Leopoldo's ground out to short and Espiau scored off a Mikaela Scarborough's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 18. Loganne Cambra hit a grounder to left and Lucas scored the go-ahead run on the throw.

"We were staying together. Our team word this year is "kakou" which in Hawaiian means all of us together. Not excluding any one girl or coach. Buying into our roles, bunting the girl over if they need to, hitting line drives, and getting on base and trusting the girl behind you that they will do their job," Telles said.

Clinging onto a one-run lead, the Warriors intentionally walked Jenna Sniffen to lead off the top seventh and she was out at second on Brianna-Lynn Sarae's fielder's choice. Palehua Silva struck out looking for the second out and Marley Spencer grounded out to short to end the game.

"When you get there and have that championship mindset. Betting on ourselves that we're the ones that get out of the inning and we're going to hold them and we're going to come out with a victory, that was what we went into the inning with," Telles said.

It looked a little bleak early on as Maryknoll jumped out to a hot start on Silva's three RBI home run to centerfield gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Kasi Cruz hit hard grounder to center and Karlie Espinoza would score on the throw for to make it, 4-0.

Kamehameha chipped away as Telles got the Warriors on the scoreboard with a solo home run. Faced with two outs, Lucas reached on error and Jacang scored a run.

"So as for today, I wanted to be there for my team. Just to hit the ball hard, I wasn't really looking to hit it over the fence or hit a home run. I wanted to hit the ball hard and get on base and pass the bat to the next girl because I know they got it to move me over and score," Telles said.

Sniffen, who started in the circle, hit a solo home run to left field to make it, 5-2. She pitched three innings, scattering nine hits, striking out and walking three. Of the 13 runs, five were earned.

Telles tied up the game at 5 with a three-run shot over the center field fence. Mua Williams followed up with a solo home run on a full count to right field to take the lead.

The Warriors scored seven in the bottom of the third. Kamehameha capitalized on a pair of errors before consecutive RBI hits from Mariah Antoque and Telles scored runs. Espiau brought in Antoque and Telles with a hit deep to center. Kamehameha scored two more on two errors to lead, 13-5.

Maryknoll would not go away quietly and erupted with a 12-run fourth inning. Sniffen was intentionally walked to lead off and Sarae was hit by a pitch. The Spartans followed up with five consecutive singles that led to four runs to get within three, 13-10.

"It's softball, things are going to happen. We put up a lot of runs too. Those innings where bloopers come from the other team and it's undefendable hits but as a team, we had to stay together and not blame one person or one pitch," Telles said.

Following a walk, Kamehameha made a pitching change going from Kiani-Taylor Soller to Jordyn Blackstad. Blackstad walked three-straight that led to three runs to tie the game at 13. Spencer gave Maryknoll the lead and Donnybrook Pantastico and Espinoza each plated runs to go up, 17-13, but the Warriors outscored the Spartans 6-1 in the final three innings.

"We really wanted to work hard because that's what championship teams do. They get put into problems and where they face adversity and we pushed through. I think that showed us how strong we are as a team in order to get out of that inning and chipping away," Telles said.

Soller pitched three innings, scattering 11 hits, striking out four and walking five. 12 of the 13 runs were earned.

Blackstad (4-4) picked up the win with four innings pitched, striking out five and walking six.

Espinoza (4-4) was tagged with the loss after pitching three innings. She had a strike out and a walk and four of the six runs were earned. At the plate, she was 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Kamehameha leads the season series 3-1 and their only loss to the Spartans was their season opener on Mar. 3.
