Kahuku jumped out to a good start and broke out for seven runs in the sixth inning to roll by Kaimuki, 15-1, in six innings in an OIA Division II contest at Kaimuki's field Saturday.

Last season through five games, Kahuku was 0-5, but this season the Red Raiders turned it around and improved to 4-1.

"We had a good head start this year. With preseason and last year we came off of COVID and all the different things. We had two weeks of practice with the schedule mixed up with the previous sports in the previous winter. This year we had a good head start, we had more practice time and preseason games. We were able to play in the Mililani tournament, and played in Maui," Kahuku fourth year coach Spencer Colburn said of this season's improvement.

After a 7-2 loss to Waianae on Mar. 29, the Red Raiders rebounded in dominant fashion. Prior to the loss, Kahuku beat their first three opponents by an average of 11 runs.

"We were disappointed in our last game against Waianae. So we really wanted to show we can be up there with Waianae and Waipahu," pitcher Faa Elkington said.

The Bulldogs dropped their fourth-straight game to fall to 1-4 on the season.

Elkington (2-0) pitched three innings of two-hit ball, struck out six to pick up the win.

"Mainly my fast ball and coming out and we knew that we weren't really going to be able to hit my fast ball. If I need to, I would incorporate my change up or curve," Elkington said.

"He did well, beginning of the season, we were looking at him as the ace. He was rough in the beginning, he finally got his rhythm back and he's looking better now. He's earning his ace spot back," Colburn added.

Three Red Raiders recorded a double led by Malakai Vendiola, who went 1-for-3, scored three runs, and had two RBI. Gemini Vendiola went 1-for-3 and Mason Vargas was 1-for-1 with three RBI.

"We talked to the boys, they were hungry for it. Told them they had to come back from that loss. They picked themselves up and brought it out from each other," Colburn said.

Kahuku collected 12 stolen bases led by Hezekiah Colburn, who had five, Kaulana Judd-Au had three, and Gemini Vendiola with a pair.

"It was something we've been practicing all season. We've been practicing being aggressive on the base running. Just getting ourselves prepared," Colburn said.

Cayden Castillo led off with a triple and scored off Hezekiah Colburn's single. Colburn stole second, third, and home. Malakai Vendiola walked and stole third before scoring off of Kaulana Judd-Au's ground out to second to make it, 3-0.

The Red Raiders got consecutive singles from Mason Calimlim and DeAngelo Chun. Castillo's RBI single brought in Tyson Rodrigues and Hezekiah Colburn walked to load the bases. Malakai Vendiola's sacrifice fly to center brought in Chun after tagging up to make it, 5-0.

"Every time, the score goes up, I think of it as zero-zero. That way we don't get too comfortable. For me, it's not good to be comfortable. I always want to be uncomfortable, that means I have something to increase or improve," Elkington said.

Judd-Au beat the tag as he stole home for the only run in the third inning.

Facing two outs in the fourth, Hezekiah Colburn drew a walk and Malakai Vendiola followed up with an RBI double. Vendiola scored after stealing home to make it, 8-0.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Red Raiders put the game away with seven runs in the sixth. Kahuku plated three runs after an error brought in Pekelo Grayochea and Gemini Vendiola doubled to bring in Colburn and Malakai Vendiola after each of them moved a base on a wild pitch.

Coen Guzman-Diaz struck out Rodrigues for the second out. Kaimuki made a pitching change going to Avin Tanioka, who walked Oakland Hanohano. Tanioka walked Calimlim to load the bases and Vargas plated all three runners with a double to right field to complete Kahuku's seven-run inning.

"The boys wanted to get it done, and they got into rhythm," Colburn said.

"Overall, our team did good on hitting and we got our bats moving," Elkington said.

Tanioka led off the bottom sixth with a triple and Amugen Iehsi followed up with a single. Zechariah Kuratsu singled to center field to plate Tanioka for Kaimuki's only run of the game.

Jomar Peter (0-2) pitched two innings, scattered five hits, and five runs were earned as he struck out two and walked two to take the loss.

Blaze Carlson came in from right field as the second pitcher and he tossed 3 1/3 innings, scattered two hits, struck out eight and walked three.

Kahuku looks to continue its winning ways as they host Waipahu (5-0) while Kaimuki takes on Waianae (4-1) on Apr. 5.
