After 160 minutes of regulation play between league rivals Punahou and Kamehameha, it will take at least another 80 to determine who is tops in ILH Division I play.

The second regular season matchup between the Buffanblu and Warriors once again ended in a 1-1 draw, forcing a winner-take-all playoff on Wed, Jan. 25 time and location to be determined.

And much like the one 10 days prior, the Buffanblu needed to dig deep once again to earn the draw, though the heroics this time were on the defensive side of the ball.

Xeyana Salanoa made two key stops, one on a penalty kick and the other a leaping swipe to tip a free kick off the top bar, to keep the Warriors off the board in the second half.

Kamehameha struck first, much like it did in the first meeting of the season, as Niki Mau found Saraya Burghardt in space in front of the goal in the ninth minute, and Burghardt did the rest, putting the ball into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the year.

"We always seem to find each other," said Burghardt of the connection for the game's first score. "We're always there for each other, so I'm glad I was able to finish the ball that she gave me."

Perhaps somewhat stunned but definitely not rattled, Punahou didn't take long to equalize. In the 21st minute, Candace Ching went on a long run down the left side and eventually found Xehlia Salanoa near the backline. Xehlia then found her sister Xevani flashing into the box, and Xevani laced the ball with confidence past the Kamehameha keeper to tie the score.

"It was really important for us to keep our heads up," said Xeyana Salanoa. "I think we were kind of frustrated when we got scored on but its all about keeping our composure and being able to come back and having a mindset that we're going to win or at least tie."

Chances to break the deadlock were there in the second half, mainly for the Warriors, who were much more assertive in the attacking half compared to the first

"We were trying really hard," said Burghardt. "We had to find that grit and that extra push and I think we did a way better job at pressing and being there for each other."

Kamehameha keeper Marley Roe made a key stop on a Punahou chance in the 50th minute, and that shot was probably the best look the Buffanblu had on goal in the second.

Meanwhile, the Warriors just couldn't cash in on chances.

A shot by Riley Burghardt on goal in the 64th minute was stopped by the Punahou keeper.

The biggest chance had to have been a penalty kick earned by the Warriors around the 68th minute. Maddison Shearer lined up for the shot and angled it towards the left post, but Xeyana Salanoa was there for the lunging stop.

"It was all about body language," said Xeyana Salanoa of the stop. "We were both looking into each other's eyes and I think i just once she lifted her leg up I kind of saw her facing right so I went right away and I was glad I got it."

Then at around the 79th minute, a free kick taken by Sarah Naumu from about the 20 yard mark, struck high and with pace, and appeared to be arcing in a trajectory that would carry it over the keeper and in just under the top bar.

A leaping stab at the ball by Xeyana saved the day for the Buffanblu, as she was able to deflect the ball just enough to force a carom off the top bar, and the the ball was eventually cleared to thwart the scoring threat.

"I got my fingertips on it," she said. "I just had to time it right and I tried to be very precise with it."

The keepers role increased significantly in the second half for the Buffanblu, in part due to the Warriors pressing on the offensive half, and also the absence of midfielder Nicole Beauchemin, who went down in the 58th minute with an apparent ankle injury and did not return.

Play throughout showed both familiarity but also racheted intensity. Two yellow cards were issued, one for each team.

Both teams have already qualified for the upcoming state tournament.
