EWA BEACH — Julien Parado scored 14 points and Aliyah Bantolina and Taysia Molina-Schulte added 12 apiece to pace No. 6 Campbell in a 55-31 runaway over previously-unbeaten Mililani Thursday night.

The Sabers improved their record to 8-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division before a senior night crowd of about 350 fans at their home gymnasium.

Despite the 24-point margin of victory, it was Campbell's closest game of the regular season; It had won its first seven league contests by an average of 56 points per game.

The 10-game West schedule is heavily backloaded for coach Jazmine Corpuz's squad. On top of Thursday's matchup against the Trojans, the defending OIA Division I champions close out the regular season against Leilehua (6-1) Friday and Radford (8-0) Tuesday.

Corpuz was pleased to see her Campbell team pass its first test — rather handily — against the Trojans (6-1) Thursday.

"I think, of course, we still have stuff to work on. Mililani came out, they gave it their all, they're always a tough battle for everybody, but really, really, I think, it all — this whole season has just been about us and I'm gonna keep saying it every game: it's us versus us and we won a couple quarters and lost a couple quarters, so we still got stuff to work on, but it is nice to see the girls stepping up to the challenge," Corpuz said.

The Sabers set the tone with their defense early. They forced Mililani to turn it over seven times in the first eight minutes, while they raced out to an 11-0 lead that was bookended by a pair of drives and finishes at the bucket by Bantolina.

"We try to do that. We're a defensive-heavy team, we've got the girls that are willing to work hard to do it, so we run with it; we run with it," Corpuz said.

Campbell closed out the first quarter with a coast-to-coast layup by Faith Mersburgh and opened the second stanza with Molina-Schulte's second triple of the game, this one from the right wing to give her team an 18-6 lead.

The Sabers caught fire from beyond the arc in the second quarter, when they made four of their six attempts from 3. Parado made both of her 3-pointers in the second quarter.

Corpuz credited her players for getting to the basket to provide open looks for shooters on the perimeter.

"I'd like to say ‘finally,' " she laughed. "I'd like to say ‘finally,' for real."

Campbell shot 53.8 percent (14 of 26) from the field in the first half, including 5 of 10 from distance.

Parado, an All-Hawaii Second Team selection as a junior last year, had 10 points by halftime, as did Molina-Schulte. Bantolina tallied seven by the break.

"We've been waiting to have a game that we can get everybody involved and started shooting, shooting the ball and kinda setting into the offense that we want to get into it — it's been a rough road for us to get it together, I'd like to say, for us as a team — so it was nice to see the girls get everybody involved and executing what we've been trying to do this season," Corpuz remarked.

The Sabers led 33-15 at halftime and 44-25 after three quarters. They led by as many as 26 after a Parado lay-in off an assist from Jaynalyn Sotelo to make it 55-29 with 2:24 left to play.

Kassaundra Sewa-Santiago hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points to lead Mililani.

The Trojans shot 20 percent (3 of 15) on 3-pointers, 30.3 percent (10 of 33) from the field and 50 percent (8 of 16) from the free-throw line. They totaled 20 turnovers, including 13 in the first half.

Campbell's hot shooting cooled off in the second half, but it still finished 24 of 55 (43.6 percent) from the field and 7 of 22 (31.8 percent) on 3-pointers.

Mililani was only whistled for three total fouls and the Sabers were just 0 for 2 on free throws for the game.

The Trojans, who entered the game averaging 67.8 points scored per game, were held to a season-low scoring output. They will host Waipahu (4-3) Friday, then finish up the regular season against Leilehua Tuesday and Radford next Thursday.

While the Sabers turn their sights to their own impending matchups against the Mules and Rams, Corpuz is steadfast to remind her team that their focus will remain on themselves.

"We got two more tough games and we go into practice everyday saying, ‘us versus us,' and we're going to keep doing that every game: it's us versus us," she said. "Hats off to Mililani, they always come out and they throw everything they got at us and it's always a battle. We're looking forward to Leilehua; Leilehua's another tough team and so is Radford."
