No. 2 Punahou blows out Kamehameha to cap ILH first round

KAPALAMA HEIGHTS—No. 2 Punahou poured on the points and the yards in their 69-7 blow out win over Kamehameha-Kapalama to complete the ILH Open Division first round at Kunuiakea Stadium Saturday.

Led by John-Keawe Sagapolutele's 286 passing yards and Alai Williams 119 rushing yards, the Buffanblu racked up 536 yards of total offense and scored on every offensive possession to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the ILH.

The Warriors (0-6-1 overall, 0-4 ILH) face No. 5 Saint Louis in the second round tournament at Farrington's Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field on Friday, Oct. 21. Winner advances to play Punahou a week later at the same venue.

Sagapolutele completed eight of his nine pass attempts without an interception and threw three touchdowns to three different receivers in one and a half quarters of work.

Astin Hange caught five passes for 135 yards and raced for a 68-yard touchdown for the Buffanblu's first points.

Sagapolutele connected with Noah Macapulay (three catches, 84 yards) for a 62-yard score following Aiden Takuma's interception.

Williams averaged 9.2 yards per carry and finished with two touchdowns. He rushed for a 10-yard score in the first quarter and broke loose for a 62-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Iosepa Lyman added a pair of touchdowns on the ground and had a 1-yard run to make it 27-0 and added a 7-yard run with 56 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Sagapolutele's night was done after he completed a 70-yard touchdown pass to Justice Wu to go up, 34-0.

Ty McCutcheon picked up where Sagapolutele left off and completed a 53-yard pass to Christian Kauhane and two plays later threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Hange to make it 41-0 going into halftime.

McCutcheon finished with 90 passing yards on 5-of-6 passing without an interception.

Kekai Burnett had a 55-yard scoop-and-score in the third quarter to put Punahou up, 48-0.

Kealii Ah Yat finished with 74 passing yards on 6-of-10 passing and was intercepted.

Backup quarterback Jeven Bolos-Reyes had 77 rushing yards on eight attempts and prevented the shutout by scoring on a 16-yard run for the Warriors.

Agenhart Ellis intercepted Bolos-Reyes and returned the pick for a 62-yard touchdown for the final points of the night.

Kalai Quon-Kaleiopu had five tackles and Sunrise Solatorio rushed for 47 yards on 14 attempts in the loss.

Alika Cavaco-Amoy, Blayne Shiraki, and Josiah Kia each chipped in four tackles for the Buffanblu defense that held Kamehameha to 222 yards of total offense.

Punahou won the first matchup 52-7 on Sept. 24.
