KAPOLEI — Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa threw three touchdown passes and ran in a couple more to lead No. 6 Kapolei to a 38-14 win over Leilehua in the regular season finale for both teams Friday night.

Before a homecoming crowd of about 1,200 fans at the Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex, the Hurricanes accumulated 521 yards of total offense to improve to 6-3 overall (3-3 league).

The Mules were held to 198 total yards in defeat. They concluded their season with an 0-7-1 overall record (0-6 league).

Tagovailoa-Amosa, a junior quarterback, played in place of sophomore starter Liatama Amisone, who suffered a fractured clavicle against Mililani a week prior. Tagovailoa-Amosa completed 30 of 41 passes for 271 yards without an interception. He threw touchdown passes of 13, 47 and 74 yards to Halai Kamohalii, Tryton Keliikipi and Malachi Tapaoan, respectively.

Tagovailoa-Amosa was also Kapolei's leading rusher. The shifty 5-foot-10, 190-pound dual-threat quarterback registered seven carries for a 66 yards. He ran for a 20-yard touchdown early in the second quarter — part of a string of 21 consecutive points by the ‘Canes — and closed out the scoring with his 15-yard scamper to the end zone in the final minutes.

Kapolei faced a 7-3 deficit for a few minutes late in the first quarter after Leilehua's Dustin Chow found Timothy Arnold for a 10-yard TD pass.

It was the Mules' only lead in an OIA Open Division game this season. But it wasn't long-lived.

Two minutes and 10 seconds later, Tagovailoa-Amosa and Kamohalii put their team back ahead with a 13-yard TD pass.

After a quick three-and-out by Leilehua, its punter dropped the long snap from center and it resulted in a one-yard loss. Consequently, Kapolei began its drive at the Mules' 20-yard line and needed just three plays to score on a 29-yard TD run by Tagovailoa-Amosa on a quarterback draw to convert a third-and-19. Hurley Kennedy tacked on the extra point to make it a 17-7 advantage.

The Hurricanes stretched it to a 24-7 lead after Tagovailoa-Amosa found Keliikipi on a dump-off pass. Keliikipi turned it into a 47-yard scoring play with 7:30 left in the second quarter.

Tagovailoa-Amosa's third TD pass came five plays after Keegan Garcia intercepted Chow just outside of the red zone and returned it 32 yards beyond midfield. On the scoring play — a third-and-10 — Tagovailoa-Amosa unleashed a deep pass down the left side of the field for Tapaoan, who corralled it and went untouched on the 74-yard touchdown.

Tapaoan finished with six receptions for a season-high 96 yards, while Keliikipi had five grabs for 76 yards and Diezel Kamoku contributed six catches for 62 yards. Keliikipi also ran for 61 yards on seven carries; Kapolei ran for 250 yards on 34 attempts (7.4 yards per rush).

The Hurricanes logged 25 first downs — 12 by rush, 10 by pass and three via penalty — converted on three of their 11 third downs and were 0-for-3 on fourth down conversions.

Kennedy's 23-yard field goal capped Kapolei's opening drive of the game and gave his team a 3-0 cushion a few minutes in.

The Hurricanes led 24-14 at halftime. Tagovailoa was 21 of 30 for 174 yards by the break.

Chow completed the night 9-of-20 passing for 90 yards. Arnold recorded all five of his receptions (for 79 yards) before halftime.

Leilehua ran for 108 yards (4.5 per rush), led by Cole Northington's 12-carry, 82-yard effort. Camren Flemister chipped in with 10 carries for 38 yards, including a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter.

The Mules were limited to 14 first downs — four via rush, four by pass and the other six via penalty — and converted on only 1 of 11 third-down situations; they were 0 for 1 on fourth down.

The teams combined for 23 penalties and 246 penalty yardage; Kapolei alone was flagged 17 times for 186 yards.

The Hurricanes will be the fourth seed and visit either Kahuku or Mililani in an OIA Open Division semifinal next weekend. The winner of Saturday night's game between the Trojans and Red Raiders will be the top seed in the four-team OIA tournament; Campbell will be the third seed and play the Kahuku-Mililani loser in the other semifinal.
