WAIANAE - A block party ensued in Waianae, but it was visiting Leilehua that was celebrating Thursday night in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division girls' volleyball regular-season finale.

Leilehua scored off five blocks in the deciding fifth set to down No. 10 Waianae, 17-25, 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, and 15-7, to secure the West's second seed for next week's OIA Division I tournament. The Mules and West champion Mililani (9-1) earn first-round byes, as do East champion Kahuku (10-0) and runner-up Moanalua (9-1).

The Mules recorded 20 blocks that led to scoring in spoling Waianae's senior night..

"The key, overall, was our blocking," Leilehua coach Jerry Keola said. "The girls, they put out that 100 percent out there.

Trinity Tatupu hosted the party with 11 scoring blocks, three coming in the fifth set. Seia

"She's the leader of this team," Keola said. "She's our blood line last year. She's the one when she's on fire, the rest of them will follow."

Indeed they did. Anniversary Felisi led with 13 kills followed by Tatupu's 10. Hannah Felili added seven kills and a team-leading five aces.

The Mules (8-2) are tied with Kapolei (8-2), but their head-to-head win on Sept. 29 gives them the edge. The Hurricanes are third, the Seariders (7-3) fell to fourth, and Radford (6-4) is fifth by head-to-head tiebreaker against Campbell (6-4), which is sixth..

The Trojans had the division title wrapped up after Radford beat Waianae on Tuesday. Still, the Mules-Seariders match had a lot on the line, especially for Leilehua. Had Leilehua lost, it would have dropped to fourth and Kapolei would have been the second seed. For Waianae, a win would have made it the third seed, which gets a more favorable first-round match against the East's sixth seed. As it is, the Seariders will face the East's fifth seed, Kaiser, in the first round at Farrington, the East's third seed.

"They knew what was expected and needed to do," Keola said of his players. "We came out and did what we needed to do to get that second seed."

The Mules took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set, which they led 18-16, but the Seariders used a 9-4 run to force a fifth set. A dink by setter Haiti Tautuaa ended the set for Waianae.

In the fifth set, the teams were knotted at 1 before the Mules took a 5-1 lead on a kill and block by Tatupu that sandwiched aces by Felili. Only a service error by Felili snapped the run to make it 5-2. Then the block party began. Tatupu, Zoe Shinall and Atualevao scored off successive blocks to pull away from the Seariders. Waianae could only get to 11-6 after a third kill in the set by Larryn-Alexis Joseph Rodrigues. But the Mules ended the match with a 4-1 run.

Waianae won the first set handily, 25-17. The Seariders led 12-10, but the Mules used a 7-0 run to pull away in a 25-21 win. Waianae was burned by another 7-0 run in the third set after leading 14-13. The Seariders managed to pull to 23-21, but the Mules were able to close them out.
