Konawaena struggled early, but eventually got the motor running both offensively and defensively in a signature 51-6 win over league rival Hilo at Francis Wong Stadium Friday.

Keoki Alani threw six touchdown passes, three of them to Zedekiah Anahu-Ambrosio, and Jacob Ah Mook Sang added more receiving touchdowns of his own in the win.

The game started as a back-and-forth affair, with both teams unable to get much going on each of their early drives. Hilo eventually broke through with 8:12 in the first when Kaohu Kaluna found Kyden Silva streaking down the left hashmark. Silva made the leaping grab over the Wildcats' defender and trotted in for a 45 yard score. The PAT failed to make it 6-0 in favor of the Vikings.

Despite the early margin and a slow start offensively, the Wildcats didn't show anything in the way of panic, and that mindset paid out at the 3:03 mark in the opening quarter, when Kaiawe capped off a scoring drive with a six yard rushing score, and Nakoa Ige's extra point gave Konawaena a 7-6 lead, one that they would not relinquish.

"It made the box come in and it made it easier for me and Jacob (Ah Mook Sang) to get open a lot more," said Anahu-Ambrosio.

The floodgates seemingly opened from this point for Konawaena, evidenced by five touchdown passes in the second quarter alone by Alani, and the defense stepped up as well, continuing to ratchet up the pressure on Kaluna. A safety by Jarom Alani at the 3:31 mark made it 30-6, and Anahu-Ambrosio caught a pair of passes for scores to close out the half, and the rout was on.

"We just wanted to score on every drive and keep it going, and my o-line did a great job of keeping me clean all game," said Keoki Alani.

With the mercy rule invoked in the third quarter, a Hilo drive burned through the entire quarter, and ultimately a stop on fourth and goal kept the clock spinning.

Then with just under 12 minutes in regulation, the icing on the cake came on a play from the Konawaena five yard line, when Alani found a streaking Anahu-Ambrosio with a beautiful ball that was caught in stride, and went 95 yards for the final score of the evening.

"I just saw two double safeties and saw the other side roll over and I was like, Coach Brad get it to me on the left and he's like okay I got you, and he (Alani) threw it and I was like told you coach," laughed Anahu-Ambrosio.

While the 51 points on the scoreboard for the offense told one story, the other was definitely the play of the defense for the Wildcats. Up front pressure on Kaohu made the work much easier for the secondary, who broke up at least a half dozen passes and intercepted two passes in the game.

"We kinda knew what they were going to do coming into this and we knew they were a good passing team," said Austin Takaki, who was also celebrating a birthday today. "We studied all week, did our homework, came prepared and our defense shut out."

The victory marked the largest for Konawaena over Hilo since 2012, where it won 48-12.

Hezekiah Anahu-Ambrosio left the game with an apparent leg injury in the first half and did not return. His absence was felt on both sides of the ball, but also became a source of motivation for the squad as well.
