KAPOLEI — Liatama Amisone threw three touchdown passes and ran in two others to lead No. 9 Kapolei to a convincing 42-0 win over No. 15 Farrington in a non-league football game Friday night.

The Hurricanes (2-0) held a 28-0 lead on the Governors (1-1) by halftime before a home crowd of about 2,000 fans at the Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex.

Amisone, a sophomore quarterback, completed 12 of his 14 pass attempts for 192 yards without an interception. He was also the game's leading rusher with 71 yards on five carries.

"He's a dual-threat quarterback," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said of Amisone, who was coming off of a stellar eight-touchdown performance in his varsity debut a week prior — a 70-0 win for his team over Kealakehe last Saturday.

Amisone was a perfect 16-for-16 passing a week ago, when he threw seven TD passes and ran in another. For the season, Amisone has completed 26 of his 30 passes (93.3 percent) with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Although it was just Amisone's second game at the varsity level, Hernandez said that the young gunslinger benefits from an abundance of game experience over the years.

"He's been playing quarterback most of his life — I think since, I don't know, 10 years old, or eight years old — so he has a lot of experience and the football IQ comes into play; when he's out there, he has great awareness, great vision," Hernandez said.

For his part, Amisone passed the credit to his offensive line for providing him with time to find open receivers.

"I'm really comfortable, (but) I don't know, without the o-line I don't think I'd do anything, so I give props to them," Amisone said.

Amisone used his legs to finish off Kapolei's first possession of the night. After the Govs missed a 42-yard field goal to end their first drive, Amisone marched the ‘Canes 80 yards in seven plays, capped by his 13-yard scamper into the end zone with six minutes and 10 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Kapolei doubled up its lead a few minutes later with a big play on Amisone's 68-yard scoring strike to Malachi Tapaoan down the right sideline. Tapaoan hauled in the deep ball at about the Farrington 28-yard line and went untouched the rest of the way on the scoring play.

"We just saw the corner playing flat-footed so we just gave it to our playmaker and he did — it was all him," Amisone said.

Following a second Farrington punt in as many possessions, Kapolei got the ball back at its own 27-yard line. Amine completed all four of his passes on the ensuing drive, including his 11-yard TD pass to Caleb Dela Pena-Pihana. Hurley Kennedy knocked through the extra point to make it a 21-0 lead for the Hurricanes with 8:14 left in the second quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Kennedy attempted and recovered his own onside kick to give his team possession near midfield.

Hernandez explained that he consulted with special teams coordinator and longtime Kapolei assistant Brad Hewahewa on the surprise onside kick.

"We saw that in their alignment they had five guys in the front and the middle guy was like 10 yards deeper than everyone else," Hernandez explained. "I think whenever that is executed it gives you another nice momentum change and I think that worked for us — it worked perfectly."

Hernandez credited Kennedy for his execution on the play, as well as his overall diligence.

"He's a self-taught kicker. During the pandemic he started watching YouTube videos on kicking and he's only a junior and he has great potential as a kicker; We're excited about him," Hernandez said.

Five plays after Kennedy recovered the onside kick, Amisone found the end zone on a quarterback draw from 13 yards out on a third-and-2.

He said the play call came from offensive coordinator Bobby George, who joined the Kapolei staff this season.

"The o-line making holes, like the usual — I don't know, those guys are real good, I give props to those guys," reiterated Amisone, who also saw time at running back Friday.

Hernandez said Amisone's versatility is part of what makes the youngster special.

"He can run the ball, he can do a lot of things," Hernandez said. "And he's only a sophomore."

Amisone padded the Hurricanes' lead with his 7-yard TD pass to Tapaoan to culminate his team's first possession after halftime.

The ‘Canes closed out the scoring with a 24-yard TD pass from Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa to Esaiah Gideon early in the fourth quarter.

Although Kapolei has scored 112 points through and has yet to allow an opponent to score through its first two games this fall, Hernandez is pumping the brakes hard on any kind of championship-parade planning just yet.

"Look, it's still preseason. We're still trying to find our footing here. We're still actually trying guys out at (defensive back) and the o-line is still a shuffle. We're still shuffling guys at linebacker, so you know, we haven't really found our best group yet," Hernandez said. "They've been playing pretty well. I'm excited and I can't complain about the way our offense has looked, our quarterback has played well, our o-line gives him time — I mean, yeah, I'm excited about what the potential is but we're still kinda trying to build this."

The Govs, who were coming off of a 42-7 season-opening win over Waialua, were held to 115 yards of total offense in the loss.

Both teams return to action on Friday night. Kapolei will host No. 10 Aiea (1-0), while Farrington will host Newport Harbor (California).
