Golden Hawks gaining from Griffin's power; Irimata racking up the Ks for Sabers

Damian Griffin

Nanakuli baseball  •   #54  C/P  Sophomore

Nanakuli baseball coach Donald Kapaku, Sr. goes back, just a little bit, with Damian Griffin.

"He's actually my nephew," Kapaku, Sr. said of Griffin, a sophomore catcher and pitcher for the Golden Hawks.

That familiarity has served both parties well, to say the least, this spring.

Griffin has thrived to the tune of a league-leading .528 batting average and has been a key cog in Nanakuli's run to an Oahu Interscholastic Association championship, which culminated with Saturday's win over Waianae in the Division II title game.

The game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the mercy rule. The Golden Hawks' 10-0 win was their third victory over the Seariders this season and resulted in the first league championship in program history.

"It's overwhelming the way our community and even the baseball community is congratulating me as a coach and my players on the team and it was a first time in history so our community moreso is more – we partying since the win, yeah," Kapaku, Sr. said.

"Right now Nanakuli is Disneyland," he laughed.

But in almost the same breath, Kapaku, Sr. made sure to acknowledge the Seariders, who were coming off of a semifinal upset of second-seeded Waipahu one day prior.

"I would like to tip my hat to our brothers down the road in Waianae. We're proud of the fact that we got to play them in the championship game because we grew up playing each other in baseball our whole lives, so it was an honor for us to play them," he stated.

Griffin, who stands 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighs 170 pounds, scored a team-high three runs Saturday. He drew an intentional walk in the first inning – a first in Kapaku's three seasons he has coached the Golden Hawks.

In the sixth inning, Griffin drew a bases-loaded walk for his 14th run batted in of the season. That extended his team's lead to 8-0. Three batters later, Griffin scored the game-ending run on an RBI-groundout off the bat of Micah Nihoa.

Griffin (0 for 2) was held without a hit for just the second time in a game this spring. He has recorded a team-high 19 hits (in 36 at-bats) with 14 RBI and 17 runs scored.

In Friday's semifinal win over Kahuku, Griffin collected a season-high four RBI. He hit his fourth double and second home run of the season and also had an RBI-sacrifice fly in the 16-0 (4 inn.) win over the Red Raiders.

But the numbers only tell part of the story when it comes to Griffin. Kapaku, Sr. particularly noted Griffin's defensive ability behind the plate.

"The stats don't show you how much times the (base) runners are not gonna run. With this guy, you cannot run. I cannot even count how many guys, taking a lead at third that he pinned out," he said.

"And then when he hits, I mean, he's very consistent and everything is with power – his arm strength, his swing – everything is just power and then he's got his speed on the side, so just everything in general about this boy is special," Kapaku, Sr. said of Griffin, who has four stolen bases on the year, including one in Saturday's championship game. Griffin also has drawn seven walks and has reached base in all but one of Nanakuli's 14 games.

Given his past dealings with Griffin, uncle Donald – or rather, coach Kapaku – had lofty expectations of him.

"It's to be expected from him," Kapaku, Sr. said of Griffin's torrid sophomore season. "I kind of set high goals for my youth team players. At our age level we were at the top, so it's to be expected out of these guys to be at the top, or strive for the top."

The Golden Hawks won their first nine games before their lone defeat: an extra-inning loss at Waipahu on Apr. 6. Since then, they have won their next four contests. But success did not come overnight in the valley.

"I think it was just the culture change that these kids had to decide to buy-in to and Damian is the engine," Kapaku, Sr. said. "He's the catcher, he's the one that's gonna spark us on the hitting side and then he's the one that's gonna anchor down our defense."

Griffin's arm allows the Nanakuli pitching staff to use their full repertoire of pitches in any given count.

"There's guys throwing breaking balls and he's throwing guys out and that's very comforting," Kapaku, Sr. said.

Griffin, who also plays defensive end on the football team, calls the pitches himself.

"I just try to guide him, but this guy's been catching for me for so long so, of course, the trust is the there, but what I'm most impressed with him this year is his ability to try and follow the leaders, but actually he turned into a leader and it's not verbally, it's more with his play, but now his verbal side is stepping up and that's been impressing me," Kapaku, Sr. said.

Still, as good as Griffin has been, there is still much room for growth.

"This is not even his full potential yet," Kapaku, Sr. cautioned. "He's getting there, but he can be the full package with his power, speed and just his athletic abilities. He's quiet, keeps to himself – he don't bother nobody, he just goes about life – but on the field he's a beast."

Griffin and the Golden Hawks (13-1) will be one of four seeded teams in next week's Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division II State Championships at Francis Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Taryn Irimata

Campbell softball  •   #5  P  Junior

Taryn Irimata will always bet on herself, but win or lose, the Campbell junior pitcher loves the competition.

Irimata, the 5-foot-7 right-handed ace for the Sabers, has been lights out since she returned from a back injury that forced her to miss most of the preseason and parts of the regular season.

In just 45 innings this spring, Irimata has recorded 90 strikeouts against only eight walks. She has allowed seven runs on 19 hits and is 4-2 on the year with a 1.09 ERA.

"What's impressive is that she wants to get back out there," Campbell coach Michael "Shag" Hermosura said. "I've been holding her back so she doesn't re-injure herself because I believe she has a future in playing softball, especially in pitching."

Although Irimata can play elsewhere on the diamond – "like outfield now and then," Hermosura noted – she is best in the pitching circle.

"She's a good athlete to where I think she can hit the ball, but I rather have her pitching because I do have other athletes that can play outfield or infield. She'd like to play offense and hit the ball, but I look at pitching as one of the main, if not the main defensive work that she can help us with," Hermosura explained.

The numbers seem to support Hermosura's theory.

In Irimata's very first appearance this season, she struck out nine batters, walked one and allowed one hit in three scoreless innings of relief against Leilehua. Irimata fanned nine more with one walk in a five-inning two-hitter against Waianae.

Although Irimata has recorded five games with at least 10 strikeouts, Hermosura is keen to keeping her humble.

"She can use certain pitches to strike out batters, or pop them up, or ground them out just by changing speeds, but she's more into ‘I'm gonna beat you,' that's her attitude right now. She's a very challenging person to face; She's not gonna back down from nobody, not even me. I always tell her she's not that good yet," Hermosura laughed.

It's not that Irimata is arrogant, he delineated, but rather that she is ultra competitive in nature.

"It's just being an animal out there – and you gotta be a punk, actually. ‘You gonna hit me? Hit my best,' and that's the attitude that she has," Hermosura said. "She always wants to compete, she's always ready to compete and she works hard in competing and trying to be the best she can be with her craft."

Irimata struck out nine batters and gave up only two hits against Kapolei on Apr. 12, but was the losing pitcher in the 1-0 game. She had a 10-strikeout game (in only four innings of work) against Pearl City a week prior, but did not factor into the decision.

Last Tuesday, Irimata was working a no-hitter into the fifth inning against top-ranked Mililani, but was tagged for a couple of home runs and was dealt the loss, 3-1.

Hermosura said that despite the lack of run support at times, Irimata's demeanor has not wavered.

"She's always positive and when there's not much run support she would just take it on her shoulders and do it defensively by pitching and be a big part of it that way, but even if she's not playing she's always cheering on the other girls," Hermosura said. "She's very positive; I feel she can be a good coach in the future."

Irimata had a then-season-high 15 strikeouts in a 10-0 (6 inn.) win over Waianae nearly two weeks ago, but she set a new mark last Friday, when she logged 17 strikeouts in a 7-1 win at Pearl City.

"She wanted the win; She wanted the W, as well as everybody else," Hermosura said of Irimata, who allowed two hits and walked two batters.

"I think that she's coming around. She's hitting her spots better, she knows when to take off speed, when to get more speed, she's learning the game better," he added. "If she does mix speeds, I think she'd be very hard to hit, but if everything is the same speed, they will load up and wait for that one mistake she makes and it'll cost us the game – like against Mililani."

Irimata's work ethic is never in question, her coach noted.

"She works hard in the weight room and on the practice field. She runs on average from three to six miles every other day and on the other days I make her run explosion sprints," Hermosura said.

Not only is she a student of the game, Irimata is also a good student in the classroom.

"She listens, she asks a lot of questions. I think she's one of the premier pitchers in the state that can go far. She has a lot of work to do to continue to improve, but she is a very good athlete and she's academically inclined and she brings good leadership to our team," Hermosura said.

Campbell fell one spot to No. 4 in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings.

Irimata and the Sabers (5-5) are the fourth seed from the Western Division in this week's 12-team Oahu Interscholastic Association D1 tournament. They will host East fifth-seeded Roosevelt (2-7) in a first-round game Wednesday at 3 p.m. The winner of that game will play East top seed, Kaiser, in a quarterfinal Thursday.

The semifinals and championship will be held at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus Friday and Saturday, respectively.
