Lobetos grinding away for Warriors; Hard work paying off for Trojans' Kila

Aydan Lobetos

Kamehameha baseball  •   #7  OF  Junior

Aydan Lobetos is the type of player that makes any ball club better. Just ask Daryl Kitagawa.

The Kamehameha baseball coach holds his starting centerfielder in high regard — and not just because of his team-high .426 batting average.

"He carries himself professionally," Kitagawa said of Lobetos, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound junior.

"He's a great, high-character kid and whenever you're that kind of person on and off the field, you're just a good dude, so I'm proud of him and where he's come from and his contributions to our program," Kitagawa added.

Lobetos's contributions have been plentiful this spring. In addition to his hefty batting average — the fifth-best in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu — he also is tied with sophomore third baseman Aukai Kea for the team lead in both hits (20) and runs scored (16).

Lobetos has reached base safely in 14 of 15 games this season for the Warriors (11-4-1) and recorded a hit in all but three contests.

"He's a hard-nosed, gritty kind of player," Kitagawa described. "He's not flashy per se, but overall a solid player. He can hit for some power, he can hit for average, he can run, he has a good arm."

Lobetos put just about all of his tools on display last week in a trio of wins for Kamehameha.

He started off the week with a bang in a 10-0 win over Iolani to close out the ILH first round last Monday. Lobetos batted 2 for 3 with a couple of runs scored and cranked his first home run of the season with his second-inning grand slam.

"What a perfect time to do it, too. Right when we needed it, so that was big" Kitagawa said of the Lobetos' dinger, which gave his team a 6-0 lead en route to the five-inning rout.

Kitagawa lauded Lobetos for his embrace of the two-strike approach that he and his coaching staff had been stressing since the Warriors struggled at the plate in a couple of mid-season losses.

"We've all been telling our players to get in our two-strike approach from the beginning, just so we get those runs in, that's how you win, so we've been trying to preach that as a staff and he's buying in. He got in his two-strike approach, shortened up and he still hit it out, so it's just a credit to him," Kitagawa said. "He's a great kid and he's buying into what we're trying to do and it's good when they have successes as well."

Kamehameha's win over the Raiders locked up a runner-up finish in the first round of play and the No. 2 seed in the second round (double-elimination tournament).

Lobetos stayed hot Thursday, when he reached base in all four of his plate appearances in a 7-6 win over PAC-5 in the second-round opener for the Warriors. He had a pair of singles and drew as many walks; Lobetos also registered three stolen bases and came around to score thrice.

"Scoring three runs — I mean, if he scores two we're still playing — so getting on base, understanding his role, it's just huge," Kitagawa said of Lobetos, who bats in the second spot in the lineup.

"It's huge for our team when the top of the order can get on base. Hopefully the guys in the middle of the lineup can drive them in and we've just been playing better team baseball," said Kitagawa, whose team has reeled off four straight wins.

Kamehameha's latest victory was another mercy-rule affair: Saturday's 11-1 five-inning win over Mid-Pacific. Lobetos drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single; He also drew a walk and scored twice, but it was his defensive prowess that proved pivotal.

"That two-out, two-RBI hit down the line was huge in building momentum for us and he locks it down in center. Mid-Pac laced a couple balls out to center field and he made two fabulous plays that could have been doubles. There's a lot of things he does that just goes unnoticed, but he's a solid, solid baseball player who covers his ground, has a good arm and just brings a presence defensively," Kitagawa said.

Kitagawa noted that Lobetos mostly conducts his craft in silence.

"It's not that he's not vocal, but he leads by example — which we love — and he just goes plenty little things right. He doesn't speak out much; He's a quiet leader, but they all look up to him just because of the kind of person he is," he said.

Kitagawa went on, "He had an outstanding week and I'm super happy for him and how he played and performed, especially with what those games meant for our team. It's all a credit to his hard work. He's a great kid, great teammate and I'm just happy for him and the rest of our team."

Kamehameha climbed two spots to No. 4 in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings.

Lobetos and the Warriors play No. 3 Punahou at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park field No. 1 Thursday. First pitched is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Mackenzie Kila

Mililani softball  •   #11  INF/OF  Senior

Mackenzie Kila is reaping the fruits of her labor.

And what a senior season it has been so far for the Mililani shortstop.

The 5-foot-4 Kila ranks among the best in the Oahu Interscholastic Association in a number of offensive categories. Her play has been a vital part of the success this spring for the Trojans, who sit atop the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings for the second consecutive week.

"I think her stats tell it all about her," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said of Kila, a third-year varsity player and team captain.

The stats? For starters, there's the .500 batting average, which ranks tied for sixth among all OIA D1 players. Kila's 15 runs batted in is the fourth-best mark, while she is tied for third with 13 runs scored on the year.

"I would describe Mackenzie as the total package," assistant Glenelle Nitta said. "She isn't the biggest, but she plays like she is 6-feet tall. She goes hard on every play. Even balls that are out of her reach, you will see her best diving effort. Her swing is explosive and she hits almost every ball hard. Don't let that small stature fool you, kid can swing it."

Kila has hit safely in eight of nine games this season. She has reached base in every contest. Of her 12 base hits, more than half (7) have been for extra bases.

In a 10-0 win over Pearl City Thursday, Kila recorded her second multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-3 effort. She doubled, had two RBIs and scored a run in the six-inning win for the Trojans.

"Mackenzie was very disciplined at the plate and waited for her pitch to hit," Antonio said.

Kila, who bats third in the lineup, stole her fourth base of the season against the Chargers. Two days later, she produced with power in a 6-2 win over Waianae. Kila swatted a pair of home runs — one to left center and the other slight right of center; She was responsible for four runs driven in. Kila also stole another base, for good measure.

"I think those two home runs were just solid swings. Not sure what she was looking for, or if she even knew, but all I know is that when she swings, she swings hard. I think her second home run was more of a no-doubter than her first one," Nitta described.

The game against the Seariders — which extended the Trojans' winning streak to seven games — was the second time this season that Kila had a four-RBI day.

But the numbers only tell part of the story, of course.

"The numbers and stats most definitely don't show you how Mackenzie bounces back," Nitta said. "It doesn't show how and what she does when she doesn't get on base, or make an error. It doesn't show the intangibles of the type of person and player she is."

Antonio described Kila as a happy-go-lucky type. "She's always helping with her family; She's a giving person and she works hard in everything she does."

Nitta added that the drive of Kila — who has signed to play for East Carolina University — extends far beyond the diamond.

"I believe what makes Mackenzie special is not only that she can play the game very well, but because she is a servant of this team and her community. Even as a senior, she will do things like carrying equipment, send out reminder texts, stay up to clean up while most people have long gone home, because she knows that is what is expected of this team. She also participates in various community service events that our program is a part of; Mackenzie is the type elf person that you can count on to get things done."

Kila, one of nine seniors for the Trojans, has not shied away from the leadership role that is expected of her.

"She's definitely more comfortable and confident at being a leader. In the previous years she would be a little shy to lead. However, this year she doesn't just lead by her voice, she leads by example and has really taken the underclassmen under her wing," Nitta said.

Kila slugged another home run — her OIA D1-best fifth this year — in Mililani's 3-1 win over No. 3 Campbell at McKinley Tiger Softball Stadium Tuesday night.

The Trojans have now won eight consecutive games since a 10-8 loss to Kapolei to open the regular season. They held a six-run lead in that game, but saw the Hurricanes score eight unanswered runs in a stunning late-inning rally.

The defeat, which was certainly difficult to digest at the time, has served the team well.

"I think that loss to Kapolei was important and pivotal for us. … We didn't blame anyone, we didn't wish for things to be different, all we did was continue to put one foot in front of the the other and tried our best to be better than yesterday," she said.

Mililani clinched at least a top-two finish in the OIA D1 West with its win over the Sabers and are assured of a first-round bye in next week's 12-team league tournament.

Kila and the Trojans (8-1) can lock up the West's No. 1 seed with a win over No. 6 Leilehua (5-3) Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Kaala Elementary School.
